Not sharp lenses get sold. Actually, I'm not even sure it is my workflow, as I simply downsize and sharpen slightly (5/100 setting). In some instances, I do not even sharpen in RAW (let alone pre-sharpen). That said, what I have seen is this. Many folks complain of back and front focus ad nauseum. They use my camera and the pictures are not sharp. I use their cameras and the pictures are sharp. It boils down to technique first. Otherwise, no amount of workflow can help.

Ask Roland (Ferider), he has a 1960s leaflet or brochure with lens diagrams on Komuras. He sent me scans once, but I cannot find them on my hard drive.

I sold my 35/3.5 because my big ugly fingers got in too many of the shots, but recently picked up a Komura 35/2.8 with caps and Kyoei finder for a song 🙂

What is special about a 50/2 Tanar? Is it optically somehow of the same calibre as a Nikkor 50/2 or a CZJ 50/2?

Hi Raid,

I've read in the Sonnars thread on here somewhere that it is a true Sonnar design, identical to the Nikkor 2.0/50mm.

It is a nice lens, very well-constructed. All brass, firm click stops, close focus to 2.5 ft too.

I picked up Tanack IV-S with 50/2 Tanar and 35/2.8 W Tanar with finder. Camera is gummed up, and lenses were fungus infested, but cleaned up very nicely.

I have noticed, however, that 50mm Tanar focuses to 1.5 feet, coupled to 3 feet only. Must be nice lens to use on micro four thirds. I have to try it on my wife's EP-1. Did you happen to use 35mm Tanar in the past? Both lenses are very well constructed.

Also, do you happen to know, who made Tanar lenses? It seems Tanaka made them themselves, but I am curious.

Hi Sam,

can't answer any of your questions, unfortunately.

Never shot the 35mm Tanar but if it is anywhere near as nicely constructed as the 50mm, it should be a gem.

Can't tell you who built the Tanar lenses, but I'd venture a guess and say it either was Nippon Kogaku or some other company that had the Nikkor design licensed and took parts from the same suppliers. The focusing-past-RF-coupling is quite unique after all!

Pretty soon I'll be trying the lens on my Ricoh GXR Mount, could be stellar on that too!

If anybody else can shed some light on who constructed the Tanar lenses: I'd like to know too!

Thanks, Johan. 35mm Tanar is very nicely constructed. All black painted brass and glass, just like 5cm. I have degummed the camera, and am getting ready to shoot some film with it. I will try to post some pictures, as soon as I develop film, and providing I get to repair my comp by then.
