Some of the early Canons had very simple construction. You can see diagrams at the Canon lens museum on their website.

The achromate is a design predating photography. It was invented for telescopes. Many manufacturers made achromates. Kilfitt, Zeiss, Astro Berlin, Tewe, in addition to those already mentioned. There are many more.

I had a 400mm f/5.5 (1950's) that had 2 elements...it also had a "rack and pinion" thumb wheel on the side to focus... it was a fairly sharp lens!
