Tell me about Plus-X ...

I just bought 400' of 35mm Plus-X Movie film directly from Eastman in NYC. It's EI 80 in daylight, as I remember the original Plus-X. Looking forward to burning it as the sun comes out in Springtime.

I love Plus-X. One of my favorites with Tri-X, HP-5 and of course, APX-100. Probably my favorite of the bunch.

I want to try it but according to my friend it will be discontinued in Japan ... :bang:

It's a great film in 35mm if you've got the light to shoot it. I bought a bulk roll about 3 years ago and really struggled to use it up. I keep finding rolls stashed here and there... they'll get used up eventually. As I remember it didn't seem to push all that well, but I didn't do any extensive tests. Tri-x was just more versatile, and at the time, was the same cheap price...

Now I positively love it in 120, and have shot some of my favorite portraits with it.

Really nice film ... I tried it for the first time a couple of months ago and was very pleased with the results in Xtol.

Great stuff, you have to at least try a roll or two in Rodinal, super smooth tones yet crispy sharp grain, very very nice for some styles of portraits.

How sure is your friend about that? :(
He read this info at Yodobashi last Sunday. They have a list of films being discontinued... I am not sure if this only valid for the 120 size or both, 120 and 135. Kodak`s IR BW film in 135 has already disappeared two month ago or so ...:bang:

I shot mostly Plus-X through the 80's & early 90's and recently got ten rolls to revisit it. The current Plus-X can get a little contrasty, more so than it used to.

I always ran it in D-76 1:1, now in ID-11 1:1. Beautiful stuff, contrasty or not.

I like it, I use it especially for flat or other low contrast subjects. But it works fine for everything. It is a little more contrasty than other films, but sometimes you need that. Here is one outside in morning sun: full tones with enough contrast:

I've only shot about 5 or 6 rolls of Plus-X, but I thought it had very nice tones. I only stopped shooting it because the grain didn't seem fine enough (in comparison to TriX) to make the slower speed worthwhile. It's definitely worth trying though.

Here's an example:

I use it as a replacement for Verichrome Pan (and I'm never forgiving Kodak for discontinuing that film). It works really well in Diafine.

Rich815, excellent, we have to go out sometime. I need to learn a few tricks. Bring Ben, it will be fun, I'll buy lunch.

Sounds good John! Let's talk in the coming weeks...

Rich815, thanks, I'll PM though RFF. My time is really very open so almost anything is fine. I don't know if you remember I live in Danville.
