I hate it that since yesterday I've calculated at least five times the current total for a 20D, EF17-40L, EF24-70L, EF24-105L, EF100-400L, EF100 macro, and small accessories.... I HATE IT :bang:

Recent German eBay prices on average:

20D: should be around 600 EUR, haven't checked in a while since my lust for it is over
EF 17-40L: ca. 580 EUR
EF 24-70L: ca. 970 EUR
EF 24-105L: ca. 900 EUR
EF 100-400L: ca. 1230 EUR
EF 100 Macro: ca. 330 (non-USM) or 430 (USM) version

(Lens prices from here)

Bottom line: It gets you the M8 body only, maybe a second hand lens. You should be way better off with your current setup if you get over the immediate GAS attack than with a bare M8 body. I would instead spend some money on a 50/1.4 (ca. 300 EUR) or 35/2 (ca. 180 EUR). You've had the money for the setup you have, so I guess you'll have enough disposable income over the next year or two to save up for the M8.

Thank you all. I guess you're telling me I'm stupid! Thanks, I'll try to keep that in mind and promise to stay away from the 'dirty' M8 peepshow from now on.

No, you are not stupid, only emotional... :)
I'm sure I will sell some of my Canon kit to help finance the M8 plus a couple of lenses, but I can't see me without an SLR. Long tele and macro work definitely require an SLR.

I understand selling the 17-40L and 24-70L, maybe even the 24-105L, but definitely keep the 20D, 100 macro and 100-400 IS.
My humble opinion of course .

Ciao :)

It's common. Everytime I am going to buy something I calculate what I can sell.....

It's nothing about short of money. But I restrict my spending on camera stuffs.

i think many do what you are doing.

i do.

i have not stopped thinking about selling off some gear in order to finance getting another zi.
the beauty of this scenario is that i/we would un up with a smaller, simpler set up and choosing what lens to use would also be a simpler decision.

bright side to everything, eh?

Your single most expensive item is the 100-400L. If that's your most used lens, then you're fine. If that's your least used lens...oh oh.

I would wait until we see what kind of depreciation the M8 has. No sense in losing a large part of your investment if it really depreciates alot. If you sell all of your stuff now at used prices you will be losing some cash. Add to that the M8 depreciation and then you lose even more.

I'm curious about this? I'm not debating it. Has the RD-1 depreciated? Certainly, DSLR's do lose some value initially, then the curve flattens out ala Nikon D2H or even D2x, but look at the current value of a D200, which some people still can't get! In the medium run, they will sell for less second hand. But, then, they are used....right? In the longer run, the price for a new version will/may come down.

On the other hand, the D2Xs, when it was released was priced higher than the then available D2x. I know nothing about Canon, so I can't comment on price trends.

So: If I bought a brand new MP, let's say. Then I sold it a month later, would I not take a hit? Sure. Is there any reason to believe that the price trend will be any different or the curve be steeper for the M8?

The 2nd hand market through the internet ruins prices.
The only photogear that does not depreciate is the gear you buy 2nd hand.
Canon cameras are worst .. i had to sell my Canon 1Ds for Euro 1500 (bought for Euro 7.500 3 years before)
But ... Leica Analog gear is not any better ... a brand new 75 summilux costs Euro 3000 .... but if i would try to sell mine (which is virtual new in the box) i should be hapy getting Euro 1500 for it. Exceptions are Leica rarities for the collectorsmarket. What do you expect if you pay Euro 1900 for a new 35 summicron Asph in the shop .. where the same lens virtual new in box can be bought on net for about Euro 1100,-- ??? You loose the difference the moment you leave the store.
So stop this nonsens about depreciation .... buy to shoot pictures not as an investment .. it will not work .. not with Canon and not with Leica.

Huub ... if you wan the M8 .. sell the Canon stuff ..... life is too short ;)

I just sold my Contax gear (actually realized a profit) in order to defray the Leica lust. Was consdering a sale of my M6 to trade up to an MP a la carte....now the M8 has me in a tizzy.....when does this madness end? Thank God for my pretty little M2....for some reason it's already near and dear....

I won`t say you are stupid, but you can feed those cameras film for decades for the price of an M8.

Then it will have depreciated to where you can afford a used one.

The crop factor screws up what you expect from your lenses anyway. I suppose there will be a rush for 35mm ASPH glass.

So thinking will cure your GAS. Buy a p&s for quick color shots. Any one on the market will do a 8x10. You will not tell the difference on a computer screen from a p&s and the M8 anyway. I recommend the Canon 620 at 7 MP for $250. At least try digi with something cheap before you sell off your treasures. I did exactly that and the GAS is gone.
