Testing rf wide angles on the a7

All this angst and speculation about focus, motivation, and function is oversimplified to say the least.

With native glass this is the sharpest FF sensor ever produced, that's already clear.

No one expects the A7r to shoot every RF lens perfectly. That does not mean it won't be a good platform for many RF lenses. There is every indication it will.

Worst case you crop to aps-h or aps-c. Camera has lens proiles onboard to deal with color shifts.

As we speak, Steve Huff is shooting the hell out of numerous Gandy owned lenses on the A7r at an event.

You and I have no idea how it's going to do, and our criteria for success is unlikely the same anyway.

Why predict failure? Baseless and pointless, as the truth will emerge soon enough.

Then at least we can disagree about real images.

One thing for sure: the Sony A7s are some serious troll bait.

I shoot film also, but I don't bang on doors to convert the world back to film. Nor do I pollute threads about shooting film with smug diatribes about digital.

Hey, as I said elsewhere, I am seriously considering that Sony hardware! I need to physically test my lenses to make a decision. If one of you nice people would kindly post images taken with a 21mm SA f/4 , I would be most appreciative.

You guys really take things too seriously. This is only the internet.

The SONY cameras may be a cheaper alternative to buying Leica digital M cameras, or maybe they are "not bad at all" or maybe even they are "great" ....

I hope that many photographers can enjoy FF sensors or their APC or M 4/3 or even film cameras! After buying the M8 and M9, I made sure to remind myself of film, so I bought the SWC! Digital isn't everything.

Wow, I'm shocked at how much the output from this camera looks like a camera. I expected it to look like god shat diamond encrusted dreams onto my screen.

Sorry, only Fuji's latest firmware can do this for you. :D

-- I myself am fully interested to adapt old crappy lenses to this beast. And maybe have a prime or two in the form of ZA :)

+1

I'm heading out with my GS645 right now :) I think I'll take the Contax 3a also. Inspiration courtesy Sony A7r :)

Wider than 35 use the a7 not a7r

Wider than 35 use the a7 not a7r

Well 2nd day updates from Steve Huff..

"In regards to Leica M Mount lenses using adapters…The A7r has issues with the 12, 15 and 21mm focal length, even 28mm to some extent. The A7 had some slight vignetting with the 15 and 21 but no real color shift. Not nearly as much as the A7r. So if you are one who was planning on using WIDE ANGLE Leica M mount glass, go for the A7"

The 12 to 21 was somewhat expected.. Given the history of wides on Sony Nex cameras greater than 16mp. Color shift can be fixed in post most of the time (cornerfix)

The 50s and 35s look fantastic, great news for most of us here who would no doubt use these focal ranges the most. Personally I'd buy an A7 even if it performed horribly with lenses wider than 35mm, since 35,50 and 90 cover about 85% of my daily shooting.

+1. I'm quite excited about this camera (both flavors). A toss up IMO. I think the A7 gets the edge - a quieter shutter, bigger but still plenty of pixels, and cheaper. I'd likely be leaving my 50 'cron on it full time (OK, the 35 LSM ultron might get some time on it).

Well, no one did it for me, so I finally had to do it myself. Last week I picked my kid up from NYU for the holiday, and lugged some lenses to B & H to test on the alpha 7R. These were my 50mm DR Summicron, and the dreaded f/4 21mm SuperAngulon, with the dangerous rear element.

First, the 21mm SA WILL attach to the alpha 7R without apparent damage, using an adaptor of course. Here are some of the ghastly results, these are unmodified jpegs:

In contrast, here are a couple with my 50mm DR:

I can't imagine how much work would be needed to get a decent result with the 21mm SA, I would say it is not usable on this camera. Note that this is the alpha 7R, with a more 'forgiving' sensor, so results on the 7 should be even worse.
