Your health care remark is way off base.

Poor fiscal policy will lead to a major devaluation of the dollar. The "Richest Country" is over-leveraged and should the Chinese stop financing our debt we will be in a world of hurt. Future inflation might make Jimmy Carter days look like the good ole days. Perhaps manufacturers will then begin to make things for export. Hard times ahead and very high camera prices. Both Germany and Japan currently have better fiscal policies.

If you are in the U.S., buy'em while you can.

No dispute there (the highlighted part), but equally, so are most other places too.

I've been betting on the euro since it started. And I've been right in the long run (anything over about 6 months at a stretch). I just wish I'd placed bigger bets.

When the Chinese Empire falls apart -- as I believe it will, because 60% of the land area claimed by the Empire is non-Han Chinese, and even Han China embraces several laguages that are not mutually comprehensible -- the midden may really hit the windmill.

Every empire falls at some point. When either the American or Chinese empires (as we know them today) fall, we all may be in for a world of hurt unless another power emerges.

I'd say that's spot-on. The only equipment I have that has survived service-free since my first year in practice 31 years ago are American-made. That said, I use German (Schick) handpieces and Vita ovens and my microscopes are a Leica and a Meiiji. (Although I believe the Leica scope is actually made here, but perhaps not the optics themselves).

Richard: The original question was about another empire, and the likelihood of major global problems without at least one major world power. What was your point?
