Sorry for parralax trouble, forgot to adjust the Varifocal properly...:eek:

I also have both versions; both are great. I have the early SLR version which is a Sonnar. Later versions were not Sonnar designs.
 
I have the nikon AI mount version, and M-mount version. I love the AI mount lens, its incredible. The M-mount version is also beautiful, but I don't find it that sharp. I suspect that the focus is off or something.
 
Never seen an M-Mount version. I have a LTM version that I use with an adapter, great lens!

Yes, sorry, actually mine is LTM. At any rate, it isn't nearly as sharp as my nikon mount lens which is incredible.
 
Or the focus is simply off. When I stop down the lens still looks great, but at larger apertures it isn't good. There is an adjustment screw on the mount, but I haven't tried changing it. If I had a piece of ground glass I wouldn't be afraid to play with it.
 
Yeah, that is my guess. So besides a piece of ground glass on the back of a leica filmplane, is there any other way to adjust it?
 
place a ruler at about 45 degrees in front of you on a chair or a desk,
put a sticker at a certain point in the middle of the ruler,
Put a camera on a tripod, at about min distance of the sticker,
focus on the sticker, click, refocus, re-click, re-re-focus..you get the point.

Then redo the experiment with another M lens that you believe is calibrated (two or three shots will do)

Then redo the experiment with another ltm lens, on the same adapter,
then with the problematic lens on another adapter.

On each shot you will clearly see where are the "sharp marks" on the ruler, and if the field of sharpness is off or roughly equally distributed before and after the sticker (I think in reality it should be 1/3 - 2/3 ratio around the focus plane)

If after all that ou can't say where is the problem, sell me your lens for parts :D

Only early SLR versions are the same (Sonnar) formula.

The lens is hard to focus due to thin DOF on an M. Best is to use it on an M3.

I do use an M3 ;) As for focus tests, yeah, I could do that but with a film camera it would take forever and a day :) Perhaps a reason to get that M9!
 
I would love to try the old 105 2.5 design on a M9. Looks really sharp, so maybe a M9 + 20, 50 and 105 is the thing :) Is it feasible to focus accurately with a 105 2.5 on the M9?
 
I have good results focusing with the 105mm lens on a variety of RF cameras. Still, I prefer using my first version 105mm SLR lens on a Nikon FE2.

A straightened paper clip, bright, is easier to focus on.
