The Adams Twelve

I imagine that most of us are familiar with Ansel Adams' line about twelve "significant" images in any one year being a good crop. Thinking about that, and looking through my images from the last year, I complied 12 frames from 2010 that were significant to me. I am not suggesting that these are great photographs, or that they should be considered as such. I simply chose shots that surprised me, pleased me, or showed me something I hadn't seen before from my own work.

Funny timing. I just went through an exercise like that myself. Similar disclaimers apply re great photographs vs shots that please me, showed me something, or otherwise have significance for me.

10 a year is not many at all. I do more than that, but Adams worked mostly in large format, mainly 8x10 film, so thats why his number is so low. Medium format and 35mm allow faster work and more exposures, which leads to more significant/good/perfect/whatever images. His point was that only a small percent of exposures lead to a masterpiece, and I agree on that.

Exactly Chris. And yes, I did get more than 12 that I thought were good this year. Twelve IS a low number when you consider the number of frames that a 35mm/120 shooter would burn versus someone using only LF. The point in the exercise, for me, was to work on whittling down, editing. I feel that I have a lot to learn there.

Great photos, especially one with the girl by the window - impressed me very much, very emotional photograph and have the right mood and light.
This is fantastic idea, I will join tomorrow because I have photo exhibition to run tonight 🙂

Thanks unclescar. There are many images I took that I enjoy going back to, but I think that's the one I like best when I look really critically. I've been rewarded by visits to your flickr stream so many times this year. Interesting that many of the images that struck me weren't in your Adams12. When I sorted mine, I was conscious of how much my present mood affected my choices - that is, it might be a different set next month!

My only problem is that I like everyone else's photos more than my own. I don't think I could come up with 12 or even 10.
