The beauty of Sonnar lenses - Post your pictures.

I've mostly been a Summicron guy since I've gotten into rangefinders. BUT, I found a 1934 Contax I with a black enamel banded 50mm 1.5 Sonnar for a steal, so I had to buy it for the lens. Adapted to my Leica M mount and though I hate to say it, I think for some things its better than my Summicrons...plus it's faster and TINY. Beautiful lens..

Here are a couple on a Test roll of Arista 200 developed in Rodinal 1+50

Years ago I compared a summicron and a Jupiter 8 on my Leica M6.
Same motives, same light, same settings on one roll of film.
There was exactly nothing to see in the pictures what distinguished one lens
from the other.

But the use and feel of both lenses is like day and night. Same difference as the price 😉

You mean the Summicron felt better? Or the Jupiter?

My rigid Summicron feels better constructed than any lens I’ve ever felt. The 1934 Sonnar is right there with it. Heavy nickel. Awesome. Not sure what the modern variants feel like, but I doubt their build quality could improve much. I’ve felt the Jupiter’s and they are not in the same caliber of build quality. Not by a long shot.

The Summicron is a masterpiece of engineering art across from the Jupiter.
It feels like a tool and looks like a jewel 🙂
But the Jupiter has an own charme. Its consequent straight forward design with its absence of any vanity
may excite in quite another way.
