The Canon 50/1.2 "I don't get no respect" thread

I realize more and more - these types of lenses really need a "close relationship" with the photograper. Meaning - it's not the type of lens where one can try it for a day or two and be able to make any worthy comments on it. It needs a good bit of hands-on experience.

You got it. A few tips:

1. Coarse focus with the lens focus ring. While you're waiting for the right moment to shoot, sway your body to get the RF exactly right, and to follow a slightly moving subject like a person talking. This can be faster and more accurate than constantly fine-tweaking the focus ring.

2. Do take a few close-in test pictures of a yardstick, newspaper or the lined DSLR test chart that seems to be everywhere. Use a tripod. Focus once, take shots at maximum aperture through f/8. Defocus and repeat several times. This will tell you if your camera/lens combination is correctly adjusted, and how much focus shift will affect you as you stop down.

3. Get a lens hood. If you don't have the Canon original (collector's item, very expensive), HeavyStar or one of the other FleaBay sellers has a good cheap black metal 55mm hood. That's what I use. Olympus OM 55mm hoods work, too.

4. On the M8, an IR cut filter really improves the lens' sharpness wide open (IR focuses at a different point than most visible light).

5. With the Canon, avoid large areas of bright light going into the lens, or you will get veiling flare.

6. You will not get Leica aspheric sharpness with these ultra-fast lenses. That is not the point. The point is to get a usable image that is in its own way beautiful.

Hope this is useful!
