The Definitive Leica Technician List For CLAs and Fixes

Maybe this has been discussed here but I don't see it..... who in the US is the best (a good) Nikon tech? I.E. Nikon rangefinders and F's etc. I used to use Mr Smith in Fla and Essex Camera In NJ but both are gone.
 
Is it OK to mention a service you don't recommend?

Youxin Ye has been recommended above for body work, but don't send him lenses – he has no collimator, and when you disassemble and re-assemble a lens to clean/lubricate it, it has to be re-calibrated. IMHO it's irresponsible to work on lenses without being able to re-adjust them for accurate focus when you're through.

What is your problem ? The canon 50 1,2 is a very straightforward construction. I have modified mine to focus closer and added a focusing tab. Not at all hard to do it yourself...
For leica body service I recommend Jukka Kelotie of Leica importer FOKA in Helsinki tel:+358-20 7530314
I think any leica technican that has the seal number given by Leitz factory meaning he has had the necessary course and recieves original parts from factory. Those that don`t get the original parts have to rely on dismantled and scapped cameras for parts. No good as they are usually bought from insurance companies...
When negotiating for a service or CLA, just ask: What is your seal number ? In Finland it is 44...

Not sure about the collimation aspects of servicing, but I just had two lenses serviced by him, including a Thorium Summicron with haze starting around the edges and a very sticky focus. He did an excellent job. The 'cron came back crystal clean inside. I also sent in two Barnacks at the same time including a IIIg that needed a major cleaning and recovering. Both cameras and lenses were film tested and there were no focusing issues at all. He well exceeded my expectations in all regards and always replied right back to my emails. Very fair prices too. I wouldn't hesitate to use him for any servicing.

Sounds like this is where I should be sending my M6. The shutter curtain got stuck! 🙁 Was fine the day before I moved, just took it out today and tried to cock the shutter...stuck 🙁


Too bad here in Frons, when it comes to repair, it's slow, expensive, and hardly perfect --that's for the few I found they did themselves. The others seem to outsource (very likely to some of those in this thread), which explains the premium.
 
In Canada I have (2) Favorite Tech's. David Yau who I knew when he was at Wild Leica, and retired but still is doing a lot of quality repair. Jerry Smith at Kinderman is another top Leica man.

I have an old 50mm F1.8 Canon lens in LTM that has some major scratches in the front element. Are there any lens technicians who can repolish and recoat lens elements and restore them to pristine conditions? Should I just not worry about the condition of this lens and just use it as is? Don't know what to do here as the lens is a top performer for such an old lens, pictures are tack sharp before "gouges" were discovered. Have not really used it since I saw these.

I've got an M4-2 with a light leak that I asked YYe about and he basically told me to throw it out and buy another M2 hah.

I think I saw your custom half case for sale on gleebay, if so that looked like a quality kit!
 
Sherry is the best in my book. Bought a 1949 Summitar on eBay and had it shipped directly to Sherry. What came in the box today was essentially a brand-new lens!!!

There was also an M5 in that box that I bought directly from Sherry in condition she described over the phone as "Pretty". Pretty is an understatement. It looks like I bought new and used it gently for a year or so. Not bad at all for a 40+ year-old camera and a 65-year-old lens.

A bit expensive, but nobody is better.
