2020 was the worst year yet - but they reassured me that 2021 couldn't be any worse. I'm not so sure about that: Ten days in and we're having major Brexit problems emerging, another lockdown in place, a more virulent new strain of Covid bubbling over, thousands more dying than in the first wave back in April, and now a Trump-inspired attempted coup with the storming of the Capital.

I think when my 14-day free-trial period for 2021 ends in a couple of days, I won't be subscribing to this year!

Love it! You are right... and love your picture! At what ISO did you expose the hp5+? Love the blacks.

Not really a part of any set, this "door in an archway" came to my attention as I was walking back home after walking for two hours. I was tired, the light and the door looked very interesting, and I did everything wrong: didn't focus accurately, left the lens stopped down as it had been when shooting earlier, when the sun was much higher in the sky, and all that.

When I scanned through the photos I'd made that day, this exposure popped out at me as being unique and different, pleasing in a completely different way. The lack of fine detail suggesting form and shape rather than articulating texture, the light was just right, and monochrome rendering was all that was needed.

Door in Arch - Santa Clara 2021
Hasselblad 907x + XCD 90mm f/3.2

It is more the archetype of a door in an archway than a specific door in an arch, a pattern brief rather than a documentary example.

Your thoughts, thank you!

The photos of mine that I really like - are photos that are merely suggestive of what's going on. Without hitting you in the face with it. To me that is what "the essence" is all about. It's then up to the viewer to add their own interpretation. It is hard to "make" these photos. They are either there - or they are not. So they can be a bit rare.
