I had my M240 lock up only once (that I recall). I forget now what provoked it but it did lock up on me as you described. It's only happened once but I admit it too was at a critical moment while I was traveling this summer.
Fortunately I also had my M2 on me at that moment ready to go and was able to recover by switching to film for that moment.
So jokes or not, why does an M lockup at critical moments?

The best camera is one that still works!
Haha, good one. Keith, since it's a Leica, what focal length were you at while photographing this?
50mm John .... very close to the action!

And that's just snakes. We've got plenty more nasties. We have half the world's deadlest spiders, we've got sharks, even 5-foot lizards!

You know, you coulda walked into that shed with the python there and no meal at-hand. And he headed towards your darkroom after that? Pythons and darkrooms......bad combination, LOL...
Great captures though.

You could have thrown the locked-up Leica at the python, Keith
Everyone knows pythons will only eat ostrich clad Leica's...

I wouldn't be a Leica if it didn't lock up on occasion. Great set of photos, and the bokeh is just wonderful!

Whatever
Think I had my M2 around my neck once, many years ago, and I saw the most amazing thing happening before me. I took one shot, and then realized that I was at the end of the roll. Damn you Leica

In general, snakes are to be respected, not feared. They will only attack if they feel threatened. A Python, though huge, is normally quite peaceful, for after all, humans are not on its menu list. In fact they feel strangely warm and velvety if one handles (a habituated) one.OMG four meters. To think they once had legs.....
