I have a feeling this one has already appeared in a thread on here - that "removable backside" rings a bell.

btgc - somewhere there's a Robot website with a photo of a Robot gun camera as found in a Focke-Wulf wreck, your post brought it to mind.

While the overall condition of the camera is pretty awful, the idea of a removable back panel like that is interesting. I think with careful machining it could be done very well. The workmanship would have to be very good to avoid light leaks. I seem to remember some ridiculous-looking black and orange Russian Barnack copies on ebay with a feature like that. Now if they could just make a straight modified Zorki without the Hallowe'en colour scheme and all the phony German insignia, they could have an interesting product.

There were several proto-types made at Leica with this feature (late 40's). The Leica IV had it. I think they were tired of shooters complaining about loading the screw-mounts. Took them a while to get it right with the M3.

Yes, this method with yet another thing to hold onto seems a bit lame.

If memory serves me correctly, back in the day (1960`s), Nicca/Tower made some Leica Barnack copies with a flipping back a`la Leica M`s.

This was a prototype Leica based off the IIIa if I recall.. Never went into production though..
