The Murder of B&W

This picture's main issue is the horizon which is right in the middle and at the very center a tree, the image thus divided by four, a big no in any "art" because the viewers eye gets confused without any point of reference.

OK, OP, at first I thought you were sincere, now I think you are just trolling for an argument.

Tsiklonaut, 'sublime' is an excellent title for that image.

It's not really my intent to piss anyone off--tho I really don't care if I do. I don't give a single flying fig *how* this image was captured, on film or digital--it's fantastic. And the fact that it violates any number of "rules" of composition makes it even better in my estimate. Kudos to tsiklonaut.

Just to annoy you I'll post some more of the "modern" B&W film garbage. Yes, I know the film is considered garbage and also it's hated by many people in the age of digital convenience. Thus I'm deeply sorry for the inconvenience by posting a simple film scan...

So there are rules for art? Hilarious.

(If this is a joke, good one!)

How did it come to this?

It came to this because you are not visiting good galleries that show fresh works from guys like me who are not putzing around devaluing their 100% analog and wet print workflow by slathering it on Flickr. I just got done hanging a show called "Silver & Ice" of 10x10 prints and four are already spoken for at $750 a pop, read the statement under my screen name on the left, it works, trust me.....

Here is an iphone pic of one of the pieces in the matting, snowmelt water cutting through late Spring snowpack shot on 6x6 Techpan, printed on Ilford Warmtone Fiber...

It's out there sir, just go look!

Erm....call me unsophisticated, but I like it!

Very nice. Even at reduced size on the screen.

For the OP, I think part of this is that great B&W images, once reduced to 800 pixels, have lost a lot of their punch. I am very pleased with the B&W images I am getting from digital capture.

Why B&W photography has lost its charm? I got into photography because I liked the B&W images of certain photographers. Now, even despite all these years, those photographers and their B&W images still look superior to me compared to anything out there today. Today there are two types of B&W images, flat and dull digital conversions and film scans, contrasty and overcooked digital conversions and film scans. How did it come to this?

Not all digital conversions are bad. Digital is no different than film in the fact processing and knowing what you are doing is what separates the good from the bad.

Eh, I don't like the tree photo. I won't say that it isn't interesting, but it's an interesting photo because it's an interesting scene. The composition is bland, but it's not wrong. Balance is not actually a "no-no" even if we're often told that thirds is the way to go.

Why were we talking about composition again? I thought this was suppose to be about prints. 😕

You do have a point there, for me images posted on the Internet has become a point of reference, when in fact most of online stuff is garbage. And you're correct, no serious photographer will post their work on social sites... Most people are completely oblivious how bad their work is, until you tell them and then it ruins their day.

In other words, posting in forums and complaining about quality of work is the same as waking people up with a kick, and of course no one likes that.

This. . . .

I don't even need to read anything else in this thread, this says it all.

I don't know if I could find a better example of trolling...

Convince yourself that good black & white still exists, OP. It's not our job.

let's see some of yours, then.

I don't think anyone is going to accuse me of being against forum flaming but put your money where you mouth is if you're going to fire shots like that.
