The OFFICIAL Plustek 120 post your scans

Can you identify a particular source or a particular model of printer? I did a quick search, and the encoder strips I found were only 100-500 cycles per inch (1000 DPI max). I don't think that would be high enough resolution to really test the limits of the scanner.

This thread, that was supposed to be showing us scans from the 120, now seems to have slid into techno-babble that few of us are interested in.

For a while there I thought someone had finally made a decent scanner that was affordable and reliable .... maybe not yet?

Thread was supposed to serve the purpose of demonstrating capabilities.

however, it seems very few of us are able to do this!

At least three of us (including me) from here have sent our scanners back to plustek for repair/replacement.

I could post my scans, but they'd be pretty embarrasing, and doing so wouldn't be constructive.

I am looking forward to posting scans when/if my scanner is returned to me in satisfactory condition, and the perfomance meets my expectations according to how Plustek specifies.

It had better knock the socks off of my Nikon coolscan. It could not in it's present condition.

And running out of options for film users who want other to do their scanning. The industrial Fuji and Noritsu systems for roll film develop/print/scan are no longer in mass production. As with used cameras, all those labs have created a used market glut, so the factories are making no more units.

So this 120 scanner may be the last thing standing.

And this is a thread about digital scanners as a means of keeping film use alive, in case you missed the point.

but the economic fact is true, there are no more mini-labs in mass production, only salvage repair and refurbishment. Without mass scale development mass scale film production is problematic. So a boutique system will require some sort of scanner like the 120 discussed here in the absence of the very fast mini-lab scanners which can produce excellent results (in the right hands).

Hello List!


I still have a question, if I may, as long as there are no further sample images.

Has anybody tried to scan larger images from 35mm film than 24x36, like panorama images from e.g. the Hasselblad Xpan? I see that the 35mm film holders have two sections where a larger picture could be placed. Or, if one would remove one more bar, even wider pictures could be placed - if only the software would allow the scanning?


My largest format from 35mm film is 24x105 and it would be great if the Plustek would allow scanning of these.


Any ideas?

Why Silverfast, why not here? I am not asking for a new feature or software extension, just whether or not something works with the existing hard- and software. I cannot try it out myself since I do not have the scanner.

Maybe because you are asking that someone files down one of the bars in the 135 holder (to see if Silverfast will recognize and allow for scanning of such a long frame) and nobody is ready to do that to their holder?

Heaven no, I didn't (mean to) ask for that - stop filing!

If somebody from the group of Opticfilm 120 owners could just enter the 35mm film holder and try to enlarge the scan area beyond 35mm and scan any odd piece of film (or even no film at all) in the area where there are no bars, this would be very kind.

If the software allows for this, or even allows to manually widen the scan area to more that the width of the two larger cutouts, it would mean that all a panorama photographer has to do, is to file off one more bar to be able to use the scanner for his purpose.

Should there be no way to set the scan area manually to something wider than 36mm on 35mm film, a purchase of this scanner for a panorama lover would not be a good idea.

I am still impressed with the image quality, and sharpness acros the frame, regardless of format.

I do have from time to time is a bit of a frustration getting Silverfast to align the frames! ( it looks perfect in the holders themselves )

I am planing on shooting some E6 this weekend at the 12 HRS of Sebring!

Delta 3200, AFD + 80 f1.9

Many thanks for sharing your samples. Your results are impressive, I'd have to say better than my Coolscan IV, at least for web viewing. I don't care about 100% crops, but the overall "look". The way this scanner renders grain and the dynamic range look good overall. The scans have a nice "depth" to them.

Have you printed any of these files yet, and if so, how are the results? I've printed up to 20x30 from my Coolscan IV using a scanned Velvia slide, and the result was pretty good.

yes it works, but you have to fool the scanner twice:
1st:
In order to scan more than about 73 mm (2 frames + inter-frame gap) of 35 mm film with the holder for 35 mm film, you have to cut the bars at the inter-frame gaps, that hold the film flat. You might buy an additional holder for 35 mm film to do this in order to have one 35 mm film holder for standard images of 24 mm x 36 mm size left. It is simply cutting the plastic bars, I think it is no big deal. The maximum length the scanner can scan in one move is 120 mm.
2nd:
In Silverfast you choose "Transparency 6 x 12". The scanner does not recognize the holder. With 6 X 12 the scanner scans all its width for a length of 120 mm. It thinks, it has the 6 x 12 holder inside, but you use the modified 35 mm holder instead. You can easily set the frame to the approriate size of your panorama.

I hope, this was understandable.
