I think these three days we've seen three great teams play (England, Argentina, Germany), and in the next three days, we'll see the other three great teams play (Italy, Brazil and Spain).
I think the four best teams in this cup will be Argentina, Brazil, Germany and Italy... Would be nice to hear others' opinions...
Cheers,
Juan

Juan calling England a great team is a stretch to put it mildly. Very kind of you though.
To win I like Spain, Brazil, Germany, Italy and maybe Argentina. I say maybe for Argentina because they are great up top but have a decidedly porous-looking defence, despite the presence of Martin Samuel, who I admire greatly.

The best camera is one that still works!
Layton Hewitt just beat Roger Federer in the Halle grasscourt final!
And I read above courtesy of Stewart that we won the rugby!

I suppose I should really come to the defense of the Australian team here. But at the end of the day, we played poorly and the Germans played extremely well. Playing a very defensive strategy with an ageing backline and a lack of strikers, it was always going to be a tough ask to beat the German team. It didn't help that our lone starting striker, Cahill, copped a harsh red card and our only other striker was left to warm the bench. And don't even get me started on our defence. Really disappointing stuff.
Our only hope is to win both of our remaining group games. Watching the Ghana vs. Serbia game prior to our match, I'm not so sure we can replicate our efforts from 2006.

I would like to see Ghana do well (they played attractively today against Srbija), or maybe Cameroon. Uruguay also - I have to admire their steadfast defending against France. South Korea have been close in the past and maybe this will be an even better year for them.
Isn't it a bit dull always to have the same 6 sides at the top?
I agree with Vic though. The Germans played wonderfully from out wide as well as from the center of the pitch. Great football!

I hope this goes better than the Super Bowl thread. I'm still seathing at some of the low class comments that were made on that.

Didn't see the Germany-Australia game today but the highlights will be on the telly in an hour.
To be honest I wouldn't be worried too much about first match performances, so long as you don't lose the first match you should be OK. Remember it's a month-long tournament, and the general concept in tournaments is to start off fairly slow and get better as you go along. Germany are very good with this strategy and are always a force to be reckoned with in the Euro and WC.

Certainly! As dull as having Nikon, Zeiss and Leica at the top...
But some interesting teams come up sometimes, like CV...

Hi Peter,
I really think England can get to semifinals or even to the final... Of course these world cups are -for the second part of them- also a luck thing... I like a lot Gerrard, Lampard and Rooney together... Let's wait for the next match...

Don't forget the Dutch play tomorrow (or today for some). They will be a definate contender. Strangely enough Japan and S.Korea are increasingly better football clubs every WC. They have a HUGE population to draw from and both teams seem very athletic and full of heart. That can result in surprising upsets.
The Germans (Alles fur Deutschland!) looked very good and very focused. Bravo!

I agree Juan... The Brits have some real stars and Cole should be added to the list. They just seem to have a hard time living up to the expectations it seems.
Spain and Portugal are also yet to play. They must be considered contenders as well.

Holy %$&*! I know there's not much I can say that won't sound like bragging, but let me say this:
I am usually very critical of our national team, and in the past, they were often (while successful) a pain to watch. But yesterday was just plain brilliant, there was really nothing I didn't like about their game.
The red card was really too harsh, but I doubt its absence would have changed the outcome much. It just seemed like we caught the Australians on the wrong foot.
I am looking forward to see Italy, Brazil, Spain, Holland and Portugal play... and hoping for some more nice surprises from "smaller" teams...

The Aussies just learned the fundamental rule of football, as explained by Gary Lineker:
“Football is a simple game; 22 men chase a ball for 90 minutes and at the end, the Germans always win” :bang:

ok, I'm just going to say it, without regards to politics or whatsoever.
Go DPRK! I want to see at least a draw against Brazil tomorrow!
now let's see if the dutchies and danish have done their homework.

Great pics you're posting here Stewart!
Juan thanks for the encouragement but I remain a realist. All still to play for in the Holland - Denmark match!

Denmark putting up a good fight, but good luck overcoming the own-goal...

yes, they did a rather good job, just lacked the luck and final forcefulness today...
this could have ended differently!
