Unfortunately it doesn't seem that Peter Kitchingman finished his book on Canon RF Accessories. His lens book lists the appropriate lens hood for each lens. But without the accessories book his hood types listed in the tables are not decoded.

Perhaps we can contribute photos of the respective lens hood for the lenses here? At least it can serve as a repository of relevant information.

E-bay and kevincameras.com give a representative selection of lens hood images. Kevin has some particularly rare hoods. The problem is associating the pictures with the Types listed in Peter Kitchingman's Canon lens book. I too like having the lens hood that was made for a particular lens Type.

It always amazes me the cost of hoods or rather how expensive they are, especially hoods for classic vintage glass

Me too. I have several hoods that cost me more than some cameras and lenses. Having always assumed they made as many hoods as they did the lenses they fit on, I could never understand why the hoods were apparently more “rare” or at least priced as if they were.

As an aside, it has seemed to me that there is not nearly as much internet discussion/ resources for Canon rangefinders as for other makes.. Which I find puzzling, assuming that Canon rangefinders were as popular as Nikon or Leica models back in the day. Could be wrong.

The Canon rangefinder system is very straightforward, except for the very early years with the Nkkor lenses and then the J mount. And we have the definitive Dechert camera and Kitchingman lens books. The only mysteries are the caps, hoods and cases.
I think all the lens hoods went to the same place where the orginal lens caps go.

I've got a Canon 35mm f1.8 LTM lens and in many circumstances with B&W film, it rivals my Nikkor 3.5cm f1.8 S mount lens. But it's really difficult finding 40mm filters for it, and I've given up looking for a proper lens hood.
It's a shame, as optically it is a very fine lens.

Canon did not make a lens hood for the 35mm f1.8. They considered the recessed front element to have adequate protection. As a user, you may have had bad experience with flare and have found that a hood would be beneficial.

The hood labeled for the 35mm f2.8 should work correctly in the 35mm f1.8, but you will need to get the 42mm clamp on ring.

Agreed, the Leica threads are far more numerous. I suppose that's due to the fact that Leica lenses generally have a character of their own, while Nikon and Canon lenses don't. There's probably a lot of other reasons as well, like the longevity of Leica cameras, their legendary performance, the great lenses that are available for them, etc. I had a Canon 7, and while it was a good camera, it wasn't an M3 either.

Hmmm. I suspect there are in fact quite a few Canon threads. Canon RF bodies and lenses are very popular among RFF people.
Perhaps that was a tongue-in-cheek comment?
Canon cameras, lenses, accessories, whatever, are well represented on RFF. Even SLR Canon. I noticed a fair amount of love for the F1 recently...

I think he was quoting from my earlier post, and I probably should have written that there are not many Canon rangefinder threads here on the rangefinder forum. It wasn’t tongue in cheek as I did find it puzzling, and wasn’t sure what the reason would be. There are only 21 Canon rangefinder threads, as opposed to over 1,300 Leica film body and Leica ltm clone threads here, and that doesn’t include the Leica lens threads. That’s almost a 700 to 1 ratio which seemed odd, unless that mirrored the ratio of Leica to Canon owners back in 1960, which I doubted.
Part of my curiosity is due to the fact I recently lucked into a Canon 7Sz body, and was surprised how nice it is, and would have to agree with Steve Gandy’s assesment at the Cameraquest site. Seems a better camera than my M, falling short in no area, and ahead in others, the genius vf system for one.

The (T-40-2?) hood for the 50/1.8, 35/2.8 would probably serve. These are Series VI hoods, with adapters for either 40mmx0.5 (fine pitch thread) or 42mm clamp-on styles, to fit ø40 lenses.
For filters, I use a 40x0.5 to 42x0.75 stepup ring, the only fine pitch step ring I could find (ebay source=heavystar), and then step again to the 49mm or 55mm filters I own.

I'm thankful that several here at RFF recommended the Canon 3.5cm f2 in LTM for my M2. That was a nice long thread.

I guess I should consider myself lucky, as the 40mm yellow filter is the only one I've ever been able to find. And it's actually a Bell & Howell/Canon filter.
Have seen the Canon hood for the 35mm f2.8, and even saw one with a 40mm threaded ring, but someone else bought it. It seems Canon made the hood and there are numerous rings that can be attached to it to make it 40mm screw on, 44mm screw on(?), 42mm clamp on, and others. Will keep looking.

If you have the Series VI hood, you have a Series VI adapter and can now use Series VI filters, which are somewhat more readily available than 40mm-fine filters.
Canon made both round and vented-rectangular hood styles in this size. The rectangular model is from the Serenar era, labeled "1:1.9 50mm, 1:3.5 35mm" and has a 42mm slipon mount .. so would also fit any of 50/1.8, 35/2.8, 35/3.5 and possibly also the 35/1.8.
For current examples on ebay, search for
"Canon lens hood/shade for 50/1.9 and 35/3.5 Serenar" (rectangular, slipon)
"Canon RF Chrome Hood for 50mm f1.8,35mm f2.8,35mm f3.2" (round, threaded)
... etc. Rectangular models seem to go for much less ($35 vs $100?) than round ones.

When it comes to hoods and caps, they kind of get lost in the mix when folks sell off their deceased elders possessions. Plus camera stores always separate them from the lenses for sale, and buyers either don't want to pay that price, or just don't know they are available. They also get damaged, and discarded when it's not obvious what lens they go to.
I lucked out when I got my Canon 100mm because even though the hood did not show in the photos, it was right there inside the leather case behind a flap, and the seller didn't know it. Otherwise I'd have gone with some alternative.

Was searching for a 40mm ND filter this morning and came across this 40mm yellow one. You had mentioned you were having a hard time finding one. Not associated with the seller in any way.
