How much does it cost to add some engraving and a funny finish?

How much time does it take off their standard production line?

How do you think their cameras would be better if they didn't make specials?

Are you aware that quite a lot of 'specials' are not Leica's idea, but are special-ordered as a batch by importers, clubs and even individuals?

Would you be stupid enough to turn down an order for (say) 50 or 100 cameras because the buyer wanted them engraved or painted a funny colour?

They DO make the best cameras they can (at least, with a modest regard for price). The cost-effectiveness of 'specials', in terms of euros earned per hour spent on making them, is enormous. They'd be fools not to make them

If you don't want a 'special' or 'commemorative', don't buy it. I don't. But why attack (a) those who do buy them and (b) Leica for making them?

This would make it clear that it is not slowing down development of better cameras by Leica.

I just dont think that it does Leica any good to be seen as a maker of toys, jewellery etc. The DRF deserves better. As someone else wrote are they going to do this with the S2?

Ummm..This kind of thing is done by a special department and does not impact on the general workflow of the factory...It is illuminating to visit the factory and see how it works.

there is no problem with leica making a special edition for a club or such like but this is not one of those occasions is it?! this is the company coming out with "special editions" on their own volition. that reeks of desperation.

I'm not sure Leica is so off the mark as many think in making these special editions. These kind of "created as collectibles" editions helped them through some lean times in the past. And, there is the jewelry factor.

But to be fair to Leica, few people who own cameras really use them very much. Canon sold millions of AE-1's back in the day, most of which might have had five or six rolls of film a year put through them on holidays. Why not benefit from making wearable art, however gaudy it might be. I doubt many new Leicas these days actually see much action as a camera (look at how many cosmetically pristine examples there are on the used market), and I'm sure Leica the company understands that.

We can castigate Leica all we want for "creating" collectibles, but just because Leica is not the company we wish it would be, doesn't mean its business plan isn't right on. After all, Leica clearly doesn't make "volkscameras" anymore.

Come on, Peter, how should it be better? The noise-performance is the only realistic gripe. DxO just proved it to be on par with the 5D, better than the 50D, which tallies with the experience of real users - professionals. What you see onthe forums is underexposed rubbish. Reliability - there were some teething troubles, but they have been solved. It is as reliable as any camera you care to name. What elde?

Ah, I read it and I see now - you were referring to the SNR charts only, rather than overall sensor performance.

I agree with some of what is in that thread - the M8 to ISO 1250 would compare with the 5D (from memory - I sold my 5D after a few months with the M8). But I also have found, as you have I believe, that a good exposure at 2500 with the M8 can be just fine as well.

I agree. Basically what you are doing is sacrificing DR for noise performance by exposing for the shadows, which is possible because of the higher DR of the M8 and because the unique compression of the M8 DNG file gives you more bit depth in the shadows.

Why? have these cameras suddenly become unusable for photography? As it is they both tax my abilities. I do not quite see what "new tech" would add to that. Except maybe "movie mode"? Or a resolution that no lens in the world can handle, at the cost of noise and DR btw.?

Oh, I think they are both good cameras. I love my 5D's. My point is that debating the merits of a current digital, the M8, to a discontinued one, the 5D, seems pointless. The 5D is history. Debate the merits of current cameras. The M8 is a current camera, so compare it to the 5D MkII, Canon's current camera.

My 5D has better image quality than a Nikon D70, too. But there is hardly a debate there.

I am convinced companies like Canon et al have years of "improvements" lying on the shelf, but release them incrementally to keep the punters on the upgrade treadmill and the cameras moving. The current "new technology" may well be years old this way.
