The Zuiko 50mm Bokeh Thread

Cale: lovely shot. I quite liked my F.Zuiko 50 single coat. Not quite asbsharp as later versions, but contrast very nice. Mine got badly fungus infected. I should try to clean it up or replace it.

Here is some Marmite with the 50/1.8 Zuiko

and this is the same with the Nikkor 50mm F1.2

both were shot with an Oly e-p1 so are from the middle of the lens operating at 100mm equivalent or so. Don't pay too much attention to the nicer greens in the background of the Nikkor shot because the plants in my garden were in slightly different positions in the two. Obviously they both present background defocus pretty smoothly. The Nikkor was at F2, the Zuiko was wide open.

Thanks, Earl! I've got an extra chrome-nose version sitting here doing nothing. It's yours if you want it. Same lens that was used for this shot:

Gorgeous shots so far!

Keith..I agree...I LOVE my 50/1.4. It has a super stiff focus ring but I don't care...the shots out of it are incredibly sharp (even at f/1.4). Oh, and the 5D doesn't hurt either. I know it's digital, but what a great camera...

Just picked up a "Made in Japan" 50/1.8, got tired of the weight and long-throw focus of the 50/2 macro when I just want a quick, light lens on my OM-1.

Needs a hood though...

Raid: If people are interested one of us could start another thread for that. I'd sorta like to keep this thread to Zuiko 50s.

You are missing the point of my question; I am interested in finding out what made people here pick the Zuiko 50mm lenses.

Because we use Olympus bodies. Really! I use a Leica 50 on my Leica and a Nikon 50 on my Nikon digital SLR. I love the whole package with Olympus. Tiny bodies that fit my small hands perfectly, incredible metering (I use the OM-4T) and as a bonus the lenses are extremely good.

What Chris said. I've shot OM's for years, still do, and since I have zuiko glass around I shoot that on the 5D as well, sometimes. I also shoot some nikkors on the 5D too. I've been meaning to do a controlled comparison, although oddly I don't have any Canon primes to include.

Raid,

I got into Olympus about 1974, largely because my photography tutor at the time had acquired an OM-1 kit. He was shooting Leica M3 and Rollei SL35. The infeliability of the Rollei bodies was a disappointment to him, and even though the Rollei lenses were great, he had to abandon the system.

He turned to the new OM system, and his comments about the lenses convinced me to give it a try. After shooting for awhile with the kit 50, I got a 35/2.8 and 100/2.8. Both of those were outstanding, and I've never looked back.

I've flirted with Nikon (Nikkormat FT-2 and 50/1.4), but didn't like the body. I like the Hexanon 40/1.8 a lot, but don't trust the FS-1 body, and its shutter release drives me bonkers.

Thanks for the information, guys.

I once "nearly bought" an Olympus OM-3, but somehow it did not happen. Maybe my life would be different had I ....

Posted these before, but if we're putting all our OM 50's in one place here's a couple with the 50 1.4 (not silvernose)...

50/1.2

50/1.2

A couple of old ones with that lens which might show what that extra fraction of a stop can do:
