Oh, come on! Who in their right mind stares at the BACK of a computer? Besides if they were computers they would crash regularly, be full of porn and our partners would call us "computer geeks" instead of "camera geeks". And instead of taking pictures we would just download them all from the net. :^)

But of course you have a point. Especially if you change camera systems as I have done. Different systems have different menus, functions and naming conventions, each more complex than the last. Olympus for example has a very obtuse menu system which takes some getting used to. Fortunately it also has a quick menu thing that allows immediate access to the most commonly needed menu items. Assuming you are smart enough to work out how to turn it on. Which I was not. For a long time. :^(

But you say that as if it were something negative.

My computer is my primary tool for so many things. A supremely adaptable, useful, expansive tool. My modern cameras ... well, they're very adaptable, useful, and have expansive features the outstrip older cameras by a lot.

If my camera were a bit more like a computer, I could make it do more. But of course it does one thing that my computer cannot do with any ease or facility: take pictures. 🙂

but godfrey, you're the smart one in the bunch...i have to read the manual for a new toaster these days...of course the toaster also is an oven, with steam and convection capabilities, self cleaning...

A fellow who bought a new car complained that the user manual for his car radio was 200 pages. He said, I just want to listen to the news on the way to work .. 200 pages?

i spent a good part of the afternoon trying to find the advanced filters so i could turn the world into b&w AND show only the red stuff in the image...the manual said i needed to find the 'drive' menu and then look for the advanced filters...seemed easy enough except i could not find the drive...which turned to be a physical button on the back of the camera...felt like a complete maroon!

I know everybody hates the Pentax K-01, but set on Manual and using a F or FA or A lens you can set your aperture, press the green button and fire. All this with AF, also when you are using manual flash it is just as easy and more predictable than TTL. No FF is the only draw back.

Well, if you consider your iPhone or my iPad "my computer", then they can take photos. But are you ready to drop your Leica/Nikon/Canon/Hasselblad/whatever and rely entirely on that kind of camera? I know many have.

We`ve all been there.
I could never find the magnify button to aid focusing on my A7s until I gave up and asked here.
Turns out it was a miniscule button on the top plate which I thought was a part of the camera moulding.

Anyway I`ve found it but it has limited use for me.

You just work through these things until you find them and then find that half the time you don`t need them anyway 🙂

The X-E3 focuses extremely fast with the 23/2. Only with that performance in place could I feel comfortable ditching most of the other functions.

That's why we buy new digital cameras. They do evolve to make visible differences.

I used YouTube videos to help me setup my Sony A7r II... They were way better than the manual... once customized I was good to go. Aperture priority and exposure comp dial is all I really use, and sometimes I'll switch to manual focus and zoom in to check focus works like a champ.

I have my older XPro1 set up with a manual focus lens, IQ = RAW, ISO = Auto. Now its very similar to the old film rangefinders. To focus, I generally use zone focusing, sometimes EVF with focus peaking. The rear LCD screen was starting to turn somewhat yellow, so I covered it with gaffers tape. Old school. 🙂

Yeah, this possible. We get to decide how we want to use the camera.

If you can't use the camera in a way that makes you happy, it's time to find another one.

I don't even find the APS-C sensor a drawback. I just wish it had an honest viewfinder.

It is very easy to work with though. When mine arrived I set the mode dial to manual, attached my DA 40mm Limited lens, set the white balance to Auto, set the ISO at 400, capture at RAW, and didn't even take the instruction manual out of the box for weeks.

Matter of fact, I think that is how it is set up right now. Who needs a manual? 😀

I guess it is all there in the menus if I need it but I haven't needed it so far.
