Come to think of it. He was wearing a Jimmy Buffet Hawaiian shirt. A dead giveaway that he was from Cleveland or something like that.
I was thinking a little more East.

Why would they not think it was "stupid" if they "got it"?
The person might be highly educated and intelligent, but he just feels that using antiquated lenses and a manual focus system to not be as efficient or effective as using modern AF equipment. They are perfectly entitled to their opinion, just as you feel that using antiquated equipment gives you better "vision", feelings of being artistic, more control, nicer images, or whatever.
Some people think turntables and vinyl records are "stupid", others claim more musicality over digital storage.
It's just an opinion, not a matter of "getting" anything. "Getting it" meaning it's superior because you like it is an elitist concept.

If they got it they wouldn't think it was stupid. Regardless, anyone who would make such a comment in that setting is not worth listening to.

I don't think "knowing what the camera is" is a prerequisite for judging it.
The man who thought it was "stupid" might have been a NASA engineer who understood it completely, and upon hearing the explanation given, concluded it was "stupid".
Again, I'd like to know what the OP said to the guy.

Either your explanation was far above his level of understanding or ............ you forgot to mount a lens ?......

It's always best to hear both sides of an incident before drawing conclusions.
The OP wanted to validate his experience by sharing it with a like-minded group and getting "high-fived". I'm simply curious as to what was said to the other party.
Rarely do people act dismissive in this fashion out of the blue. Perhaps the man who felt it was "stupid" felt he was being treated in a condescending manner?

I don't doubt. One thing about rangefinder guys is they can be exactly like the DSLR guys they so quickly dismiss as snobs. I actually enjoy the tension. Each group thinks the other is a bunch of kooks.

I don't get this thread??
"Some guy" didn't like the OP's camera. There aren't too many who like my Kiev.![]()
Not much to get, really.
I don't honestly care if someone understands why I like shooting with my R-D1s. The experience always brings a smile to my face and I'm happy with the results.

I was at a picnic last week where the only folks who didn't have a PhD or DVM (or both) were in pre-school. Had the R-D1 and the IIIf. One woman mentioned that a friend of hers was really into old Leicas but nobody else took much notice.
When I'm out with old cameras I'm always mildly surprised when anyone takes any notice, positive or negative. I would be very surprised to hear "stupid" from an adult, unless they were clearly drunk - even my toddler knows it is boorish to use "stupid" in polite conversation (Fred, M.V. - machts nichts what Akiva may have said to the guy, or how he said it).
My R-D1 is too difficult to repair for me to use it as a club, but I might have come back on the guy with "NASCAR fan, huh? Thought so."

Scientologists feel they "get it" and you don't.
People who belong to a cult that believes the world is ending and that they must drink poisoned kool-aid are positive they "get it" and you don't.
"Getting it" is subjective. I am merely saying that person can "get something", "grok something", or whatever, and still not agree with your opinion.

And whether one "gets it" or not doesn't make one "stupid".

And then it's possible the intent of Akiva's interlocutor was lost in the OP: Perhaps what he said was not "stupid", but "STOO-pid!", as in "stupid bad".

I think that's really the point of the thread, not so much whether or not he understands the camera, but his rudeness in his choice of words. As users of RFs / film cameras, I think we are quick to shift into that mentality of whether or not outsiders "get it."

"They said I was stupid..."
"They"...who is they??? You said "someguy"
"I was stupid..." It sounds like this someguy said that the camera was stupid not you...
Your Thread Title appears as if you took this comment way too personal...
You may have explained the camera perfectly and he may have understood it totally and clearly and in the end still thought that this camera for whatever his reason was "Stupid"...
That's his opinion, he's entitled to it...Don't worry about it. it has nothing to do with you...

the people staring at my RD1 are other photographers that usually wonder why I look at the back at the camera after taking a shot.

there were about, I guess, about 150 people there. It was for his daughter. Big spread. By some guy, I mean, I did not know him personally. I told him it was like a rangefinder of old but with a digital sensor. I told him that other then that it was mostly a manual camera. He just looked at me and said that's stupid and walked away. Of course I was amused by this rather abrupt dumb statement.
And "they" was just to be philosophical.
that guy had a bad day probably, and just spread his bad mood..

Calling any camera "stupid" tells more about speaker than camera. Things are just more or less usable or useful. Stupidity is property characterizing human beings.
A very fine point!
