last night I was at a friend's engagement party (sushi was great). And some guy walked up to me and upon seeing my Epson R-D1, he said, what's that? I explained it to him and while picking something between his teeth he said thats stupid and walked away. This is one time I wish I had one of my old Nikons with me. They make great battering rams. Pshaw!!!

Ignorant sod! :)

When I was in Paris recently two guys in their twenties came up to me and asked me if that was an Epson R-D1 around my neck. They were as excited as all get out to see a 'real' R-D1! I felt like a celebrity :)

One of them had a M6 and the other a old Yashica rangefinder. I asked the M6 guy if he was saving up for an M8 and he said never - both enjoyed film too much. We had a bit of a chat and found out that we also had OM1's in common.

Maybe they are members here too???

Cheers,

John

Odd response considering it is a digital camera. He wasn't a native Floridian was he? :)

Calling any camera "stupid" tells more about speaker than camera. Things are just more or less usable or useful. Stupidity is property characterizing human beings.

Come to think of it. He was wearing a Jimmy Buffet Hawaiian shirt. A dead giveaway that he was from Cleveland or something like that.

I tell people that my "old" epson digi cam only has 6 megapickles... their response was "ohhhh", and then that was the last time they bothered me :)

Exactly what did you say when you explained what it was to him?

Tell us here in your own words, without post-conversation embellishment or editing.

Hey now...careful where you go. I can't be the only Jimmy Buffet fan here.
I've down'd a lot of rum in oceanfront bars listening to him.

Some people just don't get it.

If the fella would have known what the camera was, then his opinion might be worth something. But given he had no idea, then his opinion carries no weight AFAIK.

George Carlin said, "Think of how stupid the average person is, and realize half of them are stupider than that."

I think this applies here, you just have to realize that he was in the lower 50%

I don't think "knowing what the camera is" is a prerequisite for judging it.

The man who thought it was "stupid" might have been a NASA engineer who understood it completely, and upon hearing the explanation given, concluded it was "stupid".

Again, I'd like to know what the OP said to the guy.

Interesting logic.

Some people find photography a "stupid hobby", so this comment is quite possible to occur for no particular reason.

Most of the time I only get other camera geeks like me gawking at the RD-1, especially if there is an early Canon or Leica lens sitting on it. The only offhand comments I've ever receive was from a meathead with a D70 who thought the coupled-focusing was "stupid".
