OK since I didn't get anything at the camera show yesterday I went on Ebay and bought a 17 QL to add to my baby list of cameras. ACCCK! The funny thing is that because i'm confined to crutches for at least another 2 weeks I can't really shoot with it the way I want.

Now what's this about battery modification? Is there a Canonet-guy from whom to get batteries and converters?


Ok...I have to stop now. No more GAS. No more. Really, I mean it. No really.

Unless I win that bessa, then I'll have to buy lenses...heh.

Don't despair about batteries, cp_, because the Canonet can get by with the regular kind of PX625 (I believe) 1.5 V batteries that can be found in any supermarket. Sure, it's a little "overpewered" but at least the meter in mine has always been spot on.

Sorry about your being in crutches... but look at it this way: plan a still life or a self-portrait. Those are good projects! 🙂

Is it the compact Canonet QL17 or the full size QL17? It makes a difference on the battery type! The compact can get by with the alkaline equivalent. The full size camera uses a monster size battery and you will be doing some battery compartment stuffing.

I can only second Francisco's words, the PX625 1.5V works ok on this camera 🙂

Oops, Brian is right. My advice applies ONLY to the G-III (compact) Canonet QL17.

I hope that's the one driving you nuts.

Now... if a Canonet can do this, imagine what a Bessa would do to your mind! 🙂

I believe it's the 'new' QL 17 that came out immediately before the GIII, it was more compact than the original QL 17 and differs from the GIII only slightly as far as I can tell (not in size or weight though) I guess I'll know more when it arrives...arrggg, I detest waiting.

NONE of the Canonets meters will work accurately with anything but a 1.35V battery what you guys are doing is relying on your color neg film to make up for the vartiation in exposure you are getting. Try shooting 100 ASA slide film with your Canonets and 1.55V batteries and you will see what I'm talking about.

Alkalines have a steady voltage drop curve from the time you start using them until they are dead. A Merc has a steady voltage out put until right before it dies and t dies very quickly. A light meter is actually a volt meter the more light hitting the cell the more resisitance to current flow the meter records this causes the reading to raise. If you start out at a higher voltage and then drop down through the proper voltage and end up way below the proper voltage how the heck it the meter supposed to read a thing based on the contsant voltage it is calibrated for..


Saying something works because you can get away with does not mean it works properly. I can dump 30wt motor oil in the Automatic transmission in my car and if the fluid level is correct it will go right down the raod BUT it ain't working right.

Same with this screwed up idea that a Cds meter will work on a battery of improper voltage and discharge rate is cheating the new camera owner out of the true ability of the camera.

Is there a 1.35v solution then? If there isn't I'd be happy to only use B&W film and shoot my transparancies through my 1v. If there is, however, I'd love to hear it.
