If the dark bag is not too small, it is usually possible to fold it so that you can safely extract one hand and insert/remove items.

Frank, I went to bathroom (was this at my desk), dark bag dangling from my arms. Tried to put the whole bag under my sweater, covered the light coming from the window with my body, and squeezed the tank in from one of the arm openings. I didn't get any noticeable leaks on the roll, but never again!!
Helen, I don't have darkroom in my apt so I have to put films on the reels in a small change bag (It's a lot smaller than how it looks in the sketch). I forgot to put the tank inside the bag and didn't realize it until I already put one of the two rolls on the reel. To put the tank inside the bag, you'll have to make an "entrance" somewhere so I had to run to bathroom, darken the room as much as I could while the dark bag hanging from my arms. 😛

Biggest mistake ever:
I was so frustrated while trying to load a 120 film onto a reel I turned on the lights to see what I was doing wrong.

worst experienc ewith changing bag
film jammed in camera, took out changing bag, because it was very sunny put a coat on top of it and proceeded to fix film. suddenly got slapped across the face by a rather mannish lookin woman!!!!
She brougt a policemen over and started acusing me of all sorts of unspeakable things, kept calm, extrcted camera and showed police man the problem, he fully understood.
woman started to leave still mouthing off, policeman arrested her and she was charged and convicted of assault, I got £500 for defomation of character.
It would have been easyto panic though.
She was from some weird fundementalist church.
should have hung a label on me explaining my actions, I hate to think what the reaction today would be!!

Lol. I fixed mine once before I developed it. Shot a whole roll of 400 with the cameras meter set at 100iso. I think I have done it all.

oh my. i feel your pain.
i am glad i am able to wait until dark, then close the bathroom door and put a towel across the bottom. i do have to turn out all the lights in the cabin while doing this. i hate dealing with a changing bag.

Great cartoon. I haven't done it yet, but I moved from changing bag to dark bathroom. I'm sure I'll find some way to make a mistake.

Haha thanks guys for sharing your worst moments with home developing. I didn't think change bag and police call would be in one sentence. :O
I wrote "last night" but actually it was only about 4pm. I would have been "handcuffed" for 4-5 hours till dark. Doh! And living in SF 1BR apt, I have absolutely no space in closet where I can squeeze myself into even though I'm quite small. 😛 Now I look back, I should have snagged the thickest coat from closet and put it over the bag in bathroom as insurance. Doing that with change bag attached to my arms would have been pretty tough tho.
I haven't done fix-b4-dev yet (I'm sure I'll do it one day), but done developing rolls from a trip in exhausted D-76 in the past (that's essentially the same as fix-b4-dev now, isn't it??). I wanted to slap myself real good. That was when I decided to switch to one-time use developer.

I have on a couple of occasions, during all night red-eye developing and printing marathons, dumped my very hot coffee into the tank instead of the fixer. Interesting results. 😉

Don't you have a windowless bathroom? I don't think I've ever had an apt with a window in the bathroom. Anyway, I'm fortunate to have a house with a windowless bathroom in the basement. I still have to tape the door frame if it's full daylight out and I want to load a tank.

And I'm in the boat wrt the changing bag. Used to thread films in a very small closet, as that is the only place that I could darken enough. Found out quickly that you must NEVER drop anything in spaces where you can hardly bend down...
So I'm all for the cahnging bag: if you drop things in there, they don't get far...😀
