Today is the first real chance I've had to take any images of note with the X100 I was given a week ago by Fuji to replace the original that developed a terminal three stop error exposure problem!

I was pp'ing today's files and noticed some banding in an image ... not good! These were shot raw so I grabbed the camera just now and quickly shot a few jpegs to see if I could duplicate the banding problem ... aaaarghh!

I am so over this ... I can't believe I appear to have received another camera with a problem.

Did I run over someone's black cat or something? :bang:

shot as jpeg ... straight out of the camera and resized for web

same scene a few frames later ... and no banding this time

I found a workaround - if you move your eye around the photo quickly, you don't notice the banding.

Try it, you'll probably be able to live with it.

Scratch that, it made me feel sick after a while and now my eyes hurt.

Send it back¸ with the RAWs for documentation. Third attempt should be fine eventually.

Or maybe you've discovered the FED Shutter banding emulation built into the firmware as a goodie.

It's actually an FXR Lowrider Roland ... I sold that bike to get married and put a deposit on a house.

It didn't turn out to be smart move in the final analysis!

That sucks - there's definitely something going on there if that's from RAW files. I see you're using ACDsee as the raw converter from the EXIF file - If you want to double check to make sure it's not the raw converter that's causing the banding (and not the camera), feel free to email me some RAW files and I'll try them in lightroom 3...
I've had raw converters do funny things to files before...

If it's any consolation, those pictures are seriously great for iso1600 (other than the banding) and make the camera well worth pursuing IMO.

The first two were raws, converted to tifs in Silky Pics and moved to ACDSee for adjustments. The last two pics are just straight out of the camera jpegs ... the first one of which has the banding so it's definitely not a raw processing problem.

With the raws I shot earlier today about a third of them have the banding problem which shows as raw and also as tif.

I love this little Fuji ... but it's sure stressing me out. Looks like another drive across town to return the camera tomorrow after I email them some samples!

ACDSee doesnt read RAF's and I can't afford Lightroom 3.4.1 yet.


I meant to add ... when I was shooting the jpegs just before you could see the banding on the LCD preview screen quite distinctly!

IMO, decent high-ISO performance, along with RAW are the greatest strengths of digital cameras, and i would be very disappointed if this was a common problem. It would make me want to return the camera for a refund.

I'll try that tomorrow morning ... I hadn't considered that but I suppose anything's possible.

The card was a brand new SDHC extreme 8 gig that I picked up when I first got the camera. It showed no signs of banding in the other camera so I'm not optomistic!

If you filter through the "noise" of that thread, the conclusion seems to be that it's RF interference of some sort, cell phone, AF motor, etc. And that returning the camera seems like the best bet.

Could this be a firmware issue? Definitely not the first notice of banding with X100 (although this banding is too .. clean ..)

Hi Keith,
I can't believe your luck. Can you download a trial version of Lightroom? But having said that I doubt it's a RAW converter software problem, given the banding is evident in the JPEGs.
When the D200 was first released Nikon had a similar banding problem, which was reportedly caused by a synchronisation problem with the clocks governing the signal readout from the sensor. At any rate Fuji do not need this sort of QC issue, whatever the cause.
