I guess my question about this whole thing is WHY? Why would someone do this to this camera? Could that scenario that I conjured up seem plausible?
I did consider stripping it, repainting and re-nickel plating, but boy that would be a bit of an investment. And what you'd be left with is still a camera without its original finish - not to mention more money in it than you could possibly get out of it. Unless I could find a parts camera from the same era for $ 50.00!
I'll try to run a roll of film in it this week....
Never underestimate bad taste and/or simply weird minds, I have seen once a lens (yep, from the red dot brand) with the front element slightly sanded and dedicated to "soft looking" portraits, I asked your same question "WHY, why not buy a devoted filter or screw up a cheap one sanding the filter instead" and was answered "I couldn't find the right size"... In any case I'd keep the camera if it works, it was not super expensive and it gives that Leica feeling plus it looks so odd it doesn't attract thieves...
