Thought I'd buy Rodinal on eBay, I would but why overpay?

So I saw this one seller putting up some Rodinal on eBay, in particular a 5-bottle batch (17 oz. each) which he topped off by about 1 ounce each. I figured, well I could get it from Freestyle but maybe I can load up here at a discount. I set up to bid but soon the auction went higher than Freestyle's price (and it's a US buyer) even if you account for the extra ounce in each bottle. Oh well, I think, maybe some other time when there's not someone who is stupidly overpaying.

Then the same seller pops up an identical auction just after the last one ends and I figure that the bidder who overpaid is gone so this time it will go for less. Nope. With 4 hours still left it's already higher than Freestyle's price.

At first I figured that people just do not know about Freestyle but there's no excuse when if you search Google under "Buy Rodinal" the first link is a photo.net thread about where to buy Rodinal and the first reply has a direct link to Freestyle's developers page. Go figure!

So much for getting Rodinal cheaply. I guess the fury when people thought it was not going to be made anymore is still prevalent.

except for me. I'm freaking brilliant. :)

I actually just bought a bumper...yes, a _car_bumper_, for $45 shipped. You gotta wonder how the heck someone is going to ship a bumper for the $20 quoted. Insured, too.

And then there are the rolls of TXT 120 I got for $1 each.

Ebay is a better deal for the seller than it is for the buyer. The exception is when a seller hasn't a clue what the item is and lists it in the wrong category. Case in point, my VALOO hood was listed the under darkroom category as an aperture controller - which it is and for the VALOY enlarger. It was 30 bucks, because no one was looking under darkroom supplies.

A&O is making Rodinol. It is distributed by Maco. Freestyephoto has been receiving more of my business as of late.

it is relatively close, and it's actually just the bumper cover. plastic. but still gonna be a big box. it's for a VW Cabriolet, so it's kind of a niche and people don't gouge on shipping quite as much.

I've gotten a few film deals like that. Usually it's an entire studio blowing out their stock, and it's like 40 rolls of X for $40 starting. now, most people don't buy 40 rolls of film at a time. But I do :). so I got 25 rolls of TXT 120 for $27 shipped, and those 40 rolls of Provia 100 for $44 shipped. All fresh. Don't see many of those anymore, though, as studios have finished the switch, for the most part.

I am still working my way through those rolls...

i can get rodinal locally and by the time you figure in shipping film doesn't look like such a great deal most of the time.

I get my "cheap C41" film from Hong Kong. Shipping included it's cheaper then buying local.

I also won three boxes of agfa film when they sold off their stock online. I wanted only one but I got (un)lucky. So I had about 200 rolls of agfa vista / portrait to sell or shoot .... (sold over half. I got them at 0.67 EUR a piece all in)

I never see the better/nicer films though. TriX is just as expensive online as in local stores as far as I can find it.

I noticed that it's possible to buy agfa rodinal at my retail store here in prague. They also have neutol, for those familiar with.

Lucky you... they won't ship Rodinal to my APO address :-(

I'll have to find a local shop that carries it here... if that's possible.

I could get some rodinal for you eventually .. what's an APO address?
I'll be away next week however /// photo trip to Brittany, France whee!

Yeah, I've seen Rodinal going on eBay UK quite a few times, and always for significantly more than the online shops sell it.

My comrades and I don't buy Rodinal anymore. We just make it. It's called paRodinal :).

Just like the original stuff, an almost 98% match, but you can use the same Rodinal dilutions and times for whatever emulsion you're developing with it.

Hi Max, thanks for the offer (an APO is an American Post Office for overseas use) but I think the problem with Rodinal is that it can't be shipped via air (at least that's what fresstylephoto says) so unless you're planning a trip to Israel, I think I'm out of luck.

Still, I really do appreciate your offer - enjoy your trip to France (although if your in Prague I question your decision to leave - what a beautiful city! - my son's first walk was across the Charles Bridge).

Cheers,
Alex
