Tired of the Leica Marketing experts

There is no shortage of people with money who buy expensive things just because they are expensive, or to have a status symbol.

My decisions are never based on what these people may do with their money, however. I enjoy looking at the $450K Carrera GT that shows up at various car events, but I have just as much fun in my old boxer 911 as he does driving his V10.

Driving older cars keeps you more alert. no abs, electronic help systems etc. (no AF no AE, no metering)

It kicks in more adrenalin and you have more fun for less money. voila 😉

which modell do you have?

The problem for Leica, is that to have the equivalent of an $1800 D300, they would have to have a much bigger product line, across the entire price range, like Nikon does. The sales of tens of thousands of $100 point and lower end DSLRs (among many other products) is what allows them to produce a D300 for $1800.

Leica doesn't have that capability. What needs to happen is Leica needs to be acquired by someone like Nikon (well, that means Nikon or Canon) to give them all the benefits of the higher volume and access to the chipsets and technology that simply moves too fast for a niche company like Leica.

It's a 993.

wow what nice car 🙂 it is even prettier than 996 so 997 got that 993 design back just sleekier 😀 you know what I mean 😉

how is this to drive if you've tried other models of porsche or other? Too bad that prices of older 911 are rising so 993 seems to be good thing to begin dream more realistically about 😀

The 993 is the last of the hand built air cooled models, so they hold their value well. 🙂

I've had a few Porsches, like a 1972 911S, also a 1973 911E. The 993 is heavier than those, but more refined, but with more solid feel than the later cars like the Boxster and the 997.

Porsche expanded their product line to lower priced models and the Cayenne SUV in order to remain independent. They are the most profitable car company in the world, but companies like GM sell as many cars in a day as Porsche does in a year.

Just a point of order:

High-quality cameras such as Nikons and Leicas have ALWAYS been expensive. The prices in the ad you posted are, adjusted for inflation:

Leica M3 $3300

Nikon S-2 $3000

Not exactly cheap. These cameras were very well made and they were pushing the boundaries of technology at the time. People who had the means and desire saved up for them. Not so different from today.
Well, funny thing, I made the same calculations myself, and had similar prices. But the big difference between Then(tm) and Now(tm) is that a Leica MP + 50mm Summicron at BH today, new, would cost 5,800$. Of course, the MP has a meter unlike the M3, which explains the whole difference in price! 😉

So yes, 3k$ is a lot of money for a camera, but compare it with the price of a modern top of the line laptop or camera and it's not that outrageous.

6k$ for something that isn't top of the line, on the other hand, I consider it a luxury or a niche market.

Despite the fact that most of the greatest photos of all time were not taken with Leicas, ~snip~

Interesting fact. Is there any source for the statistics on which you based your statement ? Or, what are "the greatest photos of all time" ?

I dunno. Ralph Gibson says most great photos were made with a 50mm, but even he doesn't say "on a Leica." Probably too few photographers can afford them.

How many of the most famous photos ever were made with Leica cameras ? Now the thread finally has fallen on that well known level below ground. 🙂)))))))

sitemistic, I don't have any statistics or facts about which great photos were taken with which equipment. Honestly, I don't care about it. If I like a photo or exhibition, I try to get information about the photographer and his motivation.

I'm just sad I missed the 'favorite f-stop thread'. That sounds like a blast. Mine's like 5 6.

Hey Ned, got anything, uh, new? 😉 🙂 😀

maddoc, just to check myself I just went through a few photo books I have, including Pulitzer Price Photos. Few were made with Leicas. Most were made either with speed graphics, or Nikon, or Canon SLR's. Perhaps you have a different criteria. And I will gladly yield to your statistics.
BTW, what IS the price of a Pulitzer?

You want me banned? You know I have the capacity to create an explosive thread (not so much the subject as much as I my own personality) with my personal thoughts on things. I'm not sure it's always a good thing

P.S.: I didn't start the F-stop thread.

Who in their right mind would ban you, Ned?!!

But I was after the things you say with your camera. You have been silent since your return from Cuba. If you've got the Block, it's understandable. Especially after the flurry of travel and ... color film!

Hey, I'm shooting a wedding next month, and yeah - I'm taking the Leica! 😀

Wedding? Great! You have to promise to post the pictures!

This winter has been extremely hard on us. Record snowfalls, thus record shoveling. Especially after coming from Cuba, the cold weather is starting to hit merd on the system. I should have some new stuff soon, though. Thanks for asking.!
