To case or not to case?

I have two bodies: a Hexar RF and an M4. The Hexar has a half case, which I like a lot. It hasn't proven to be a problem in changing film. The M4 has no case, so, it seems I don't feel strongly enough about cases to buy one for it. But I may some day.

A half case acts as a blimp to some extent, damping the shutter sound. It may also have a strap attached. It adds little to the volume of the camera. With a Leica, if you want a half case you need to be a surgeon with a scalpel. Devil knows why they don't use two portions which can be kept together or separated. I didn't use the case which came with the M3 I had, and I don't use the case which came with the IIIc I have.

If you're working with just one camera, then a wrist strap. If you're using two or more bodies, each loaded with different film, for example, or each mounting a different lens, then neck straps for all.

I never thought cases made any sense. I think they look and feel awkward.

I do use a wrist strap, though. And I love having it. Especially when I'm walking through a crowded place. No one would be able to snath the camera from my hand without giving it a very very strong jerk.

If I'm carrying a gadget bag, a wrist strap works best for me. However, if I'm just carrying a camera and no bag, a neckstrap is practical more practical for me.

Presently, I go caseless. However, if I had one of those new Zeiss Ikons, I'd probably spring for a half-case with an integral grip. I like something to hold on to when I'm using a wrist strap. My Bessa R2a can go without a grip because of the ergonomic hump on its back, but my Leica M needs it. With the Leica, I don't use a half-case, but rather the older style M-Grip.

The grip thing isn't important to me when I'm using the neckstrap, however.

cases for winter shooting.

wrist straps.

i use a long strap on the cl as it hangs long ways against my side and because the 2 lugs on the same/wrong side make a wrsit strap a bit of a pain.

when i use 2 cameras i still use wrsit straps and just drop the camera not in use in the mclassic bag on my side.

I use blue duct tape as it is less noticeable. 😀

Wise precaution. That could be why they dropped a net on me when I was doing my Grass Skirt and Demagogue Interpretive Dance last Tuesday, while trying to photograph the entire affair with the camera affixed in the aforementioned manner.

Mmmm, Thorazine...crunchy!

wow! blue duct tape does all that!!!!

I have a whole box full of never-ready cases. Akward damn things. Bah!
Don't care for wrist straps. More apt to bang the camera against something when you need two hands.
Tend to use a rather short neck strap. That way the gut protects the camera. Lighter RF cameras usualy wind up suspended by a heavy boot lace. An extra foot of cord on one side with a fishing snap swivel provides a place for a light meter to hang, stuffed in a shirt pocket when not in use.
If I'm grabbing the camera for a fleeting shot I might loop the strap around my wrist as I pick it up. Shoot and untangle my self later.
Ditched the wrist strap on my Rolei 35 in favor of a shoe lace with a loop that attaches to a button hole ala Minox. Camera lives in shirt pocket.

Brillant!!! Some great ideas.

My Bessas (L and R) don't leave the house without their lower half case. The case gives a bit more substance to the body and makes for a comfortable grip. My R-D1 doesn't have a case (yet) because there wasn't one available from Epson and the Luigi case is still a dream. My CL never had a case and I doubt I'll find one that's as nice as the Bessa's.

BTW, I don't even know if there's such a thing as a case for my Eos 300D.

Always (four decades or so) used short neck straps like Tkluck. Thin ones, so also easy to loop around wrist. Now trying a wrist strap on one body on the ground that since so many people use it, there may be something to it. Too early to tell if it works for me.

Forgot to say that a half case gives the camera body just that extra bit of protection. Interferes with tripods and flash brackets, though.

Hi kshapero,

I didn't use a half case on my Bessa R2 until I chipped the paint on the edge. They are somewhat known for chipping. After that, I use a half case. It's from an OM-2000 and is a perfect fit.

With my Zorki's, a half case keeps the paint from rubbing onto my hand! Also helps prevent light leaks. I either use a razor blade and cut the case at the snap, or have a shoe repair place do it.

Neck/wrist strap

Neck/wrist strap

Went to Ritz Camera and got a wrist/neck strap for $8. And I will keep my half case on for now.
I would attach a photo of the strap if someone could show me how.
