Canada Toronto area RFF member meeting this summer

Okay this is coming up this Saturday so let's see who's up for it. So far we've got:

Victor
and Frank (appearing as myself)

There are a few more Toronto and area members. (Kin and Jan come to mind.) All are welcome, we're a friendly and polite group. Speak up if you are interested and we will add you to the list. We'll walk around a bit, possibly ferry to Centre Island (there is a summer weekends jazz thing happening over there), take some photos, maybe bring along some prints to discuss later over coffees or pints. Those who can stay longer can grab dinner and photographically explore Toronto by evening. I'll post my clell phone number later on so we can meet any latecomers or folks who've gotten lost. Other ideas welcome too.

I don't know if I can make a day of it but I could probably meet for some 'refreshments'
I live downtown so getting together is easy. I can't get a whole day but part is fairly real.

Some things to note.

Parkdale is pretty inaccessible due to the Queen Car tracks being torn up from Ossington west to Brock.

The Beach (where I used to live) is so crazy during the Jazz Festival that you have to park about half a mile away and start walking. Coordinating for that is a logistic issue for a group not so much for an individual though

Liberty Village is kinda quiet, but close to the Ex and those older buildings are interesting.

Kensington, Spadina's Chinatown, and the Harbourfront are easy because they are all close together .

Yorkville... lotsa high end jewellry and high maintenance people too. Could be interesting. "you took my picture, my lawyer will be contacting you" stuff around there

Distillery district. Once you are there, you realize that you are pretty much isolated from the rest of the city down in that corner.

I'd go for the Danforth as an easiest venue , lotsa people, ease of access either by car on the DVP or TTC .The 'taste of the Danforth' is easily accessed by subway at Broadview, Chester, Pape and there are a zillion patios for a break. The food, drinks and restaurants are affordable and you don't get rushed too badly. There are also parks, in the area where kids play and some of the streetscapes are photographic .

This is shaping up to be a great event -- just wish you could join us Joe. What about any of you folks in Rochester? Is that ferry thing working yet between Toronto and Rochester?

Given the scorching heat wave that will last all week, I'd be inclined towards the venues near water -- Queen's Quay (Harbourfront area) and Toronto Islands. Someplace to catch the lake breezes -- areas like Kensington, Queen St W, Danforth, etc are really stifling during the day when it's this hot.

Of course, the venues need to be near brew too 😀

Had a really great meet with some photo.net classic board people last month at the Black Bull Pub on Queen St West. Most of us were packing at least one rangefinder, Contax for me, of course 😉

Yes, the ferry is running again. From our old house the terminal was 5 minutes away, now we live about 1/2 hour away and that much toward Toronto. So to drive that far in the wrong direction plus hassle with security, it's quicker for me to just drive. Unfortunately, this week-end doesn't work into the schedule. Maybe next time.

I have just looked at my calendar. I will probably be able to sit in for a few hours on the Saturday this weekend. The following Saturday I will be out of town.

I have a feeling that a lot of Torontonians go north for the weekend. This may reduce the potential numbers a bit.

Sorry for those who would like to, but can't make it. Closer to the lake/islands sounds good to me too! The jazz event I mentioned earlier is not the major Queen St. event, but rather weekly (weekends) mini festivals on Centre Island.

I am definately on board, I am free after lunch. I am up for Kensington Market because I have not been there yet this year. I am not so keen on Habourfront due to parking issues. Another idea, how about the Annex? or Little Italy on College? Thoughts?

Another thought, we may have to keep an eye on the weather. The long term forcast on the weather network is calling for rain all day (tail end of Dennis?). It may turn more into a drinking session.

Well, lets just keep our options open. I saw the long term weather on Global for Saturday and it they said its going to be nice...and hot. Lets say if the sun shines we bring our toys to shoot, if its rainy we bring our toys, drink and compare. We'll make Frank our designated ring leader for this outing.
