Do I need EU version batteries (18-663) to use in the charger when I'm in France/Ireland this summer? The charger should be fine with the right plug, right? If I do need different batteries, better to get them here?

Thanks...

I don't think that you need different batteries. The right plug adapter should be enough.

I agree. It's an international charger. Clunky, but international.

Have a great trip! Post lots of pictures!!

How do you think the "new batteries" would interact with the camera? Just because you hop islands in the sea, does not force you to change your lenses, batteries, color dresses, ...

All you need to be able to do is mate your stomach to new food and your battery charger to new mains voltage. So do look at your charger carefully. It probably says 100 - 250 V on there someplace. If it does you are fine everywhere on earth. If it says 127 V or 117 V or some such limited US voltage on there, you are in trouble with that charger anywhere else on this globe. Physics 101 never taken, I am afraid. But I am almost 99 % sure that your charger will be "universal" as all of them are nowadays. DO LOOK, however.

Even if the charger is good for European 240V the pin arrangement will be wrong, except in super luxury hotels that have US style electrical outlets.

You'll need an adaptor from the airport, although hotel chambermaids usually have several that previous guests have left behind.

I agree with Jon. Here in Europe any country has its own plug, so the French plug is different from the British one, from the German, from the Italian: I think you may find such an adapter in any large department store (I remember I saw it in Walgreens in Las Vegas, two years ago).
By the way, when in Europe you cannot miss Italy: Rome is a great place for any photo addict!
Have a nice and safe trip.

You need a plug adapter.

There is no difference between "EU" batteries and batteries from anywhere else. Just a different sticker because of different regulatory agencies. The batteries are identical.

As you live in NYC such adapters are available almost everywhere including Walgreens, Rite Aid, Duane Reed, certainly Radio Shack, etc. I'm sure they are cheaper here than overseas. Bon Voyage.

Hello Susan,

the M8 Charger comes with three different adapters. With these adapters you will have no problems here in Europe. The charger was built to handle 240V...

thanks so much for the info!

thanks so much for the info!

Wow - thanks everyone for the speedy responses. I'll go reassured and happy. And I'll shoot a LOT of pictures, I'm sure.

Bon voyage, Susan. I always look forward to your photos on Flickr. If you shoot European scenery the way you shoot New York, we're all in for a treat. Enjoy your trip, and please keep 'em coming.

I had not seen your photos before the Peter Klein comment above prompted me to look at your Flickr gallery. I am very impressed and look forward to seeing your photos of France and Ireland.

Thank you so much, Peter and Jon - I love the encouragement! I will take a lot of pictures in five weeks - Flickr will be sorry they took away the posting limit!
