Upgrade dilemma

I purchased a new M7 (my first Leica) a few months ago. When I read about an upgraded VF and an upgraded DX reader, I sent a note to Leica asking if these were available under warranty. I was just informed by email that both upgrades are covered.

Here's the dilemma: I now believe that my VF is, in fact, the upgraded version; that leaves the DX reader, optical rather than mechanical. A VF upgrade is done in NJ, but the DX reader has to be done in Germany. Leica NJ will forward it to Germany after the VF question is settled.

On this forum I've been following the horror stories about Leica's repair service, especially the very long delays. The prospect of being without the camera for an extended period is not a pleasant one.

My question: is the upgrade to the DX reader worth the trouble? Anyone out there who can make a before and after comparison? Any input would be much appreciated.

Upgraded VF I can understand, but what's the need for upgraded DX reader? what's wrong with the non-upgraded one?

The older reader is thought to be much less reliable than the newer optical reader. Also it can be quite difficult getting the film cassette out of the cameras with the mechanical reader.

Harry it is Leica NJ and Leica UK that are suffering. Leica Solms is doing OK. If your VF is the upgraded one it won't take as long as you think.

Thanks, Peter. I'll probably opt for the new DX reader and use my Hexar RF while waiting for the return of the M7.

Both of my M7 bodies have the mechanical reader. There are certainly plenty of reports of weird problems but I have not experienced any (yet) with either body. I am not planning on an upgrade even though one of them is a Passport and I think the other (from HK) is still under the international warranty. I've had issues with sticky cassettes but I don't think that's a reason to return the camera. You might want to consider using your camera and if the DX acts up then get it replaced but not otherwise.
