I've got a film scanner that I bought used in 2002 or 2003... the Canon CanonScan 4200 FSU. It's a reasonably good unit and has served me well, and scans up to 4200dpi but it is fairly slow on my USB connection.

Recently, I tried to scan a 35mm slide for printing at 5x7", and I found that the shadow details were blocked up altogether - nothing I did in Photoshop could salvage the scan.

I have a copy of Vuescan that's at least 2 years old. I can't really afford to upgrade the film scanner right now -- would upgrading to the most recent version of Vuescan improve things, or am I just stuck with what I've got until I get new hardware?

if you have the pro version you get free upgrades for life so upgrading to the new version should be easy. Ed's very helpful if you get stuck and there has been quite a few changes in the recent upgrades.

You will probably have to get a new serial number from Vuescan since Ed changes the sequencing every once in a while to thwart key generators. You can do this online at the Vuescan site. One word of caution. If you have version of Vuescan that is working, you will want to save/copy that version somewhere. Often there are issues with new upgrades in Vuescan, so you want to have "old reliable" available in case you discover a bug and need to wait for Ed to fix it.
