Someone recently posted a price guide for used Leica's, and I noticed the MP was priced at around $2,100 - $2,500. I know these don't pop up on the used market often, but has anyone really managed to purchase one at that price? Is this price range realistic?

I'd love to find a warn beater of an MP for under $2,000, preferably black of course.

I found one for $1900 and change (very clean). I would say the prices are more $2200-$2600 from what I have seen.

yes, there are plenty of cheap mps around but mostly without papers and box which will render its value down by at least half. do you guys think its possible to "skin an M6 with MP shell" since this 2 cameras are the same cept for the build. Some are selling at less than 2k but without box or paper. and I find it highly fishy...

Don't MP's have the old style rewind knob, unless a la carte. Speaking of a la carte, isn't that name for a custom camera a bit strange? Something built custom is not 'on the card', that's why you'd have it made custom!

pedant's corner:

set menu - the restaurant has chosen what starter, main course etc. you can have

a la carte - you can choose what combination of courses you want from what is on the menu

With a la carte the customer can choose what frame lines, leather etc. they want from the options given by Leica, so it's an accurate term.

Custom would be more appropriate for cases in which there was no set of options set out to choose from, for example ordering a meal not listed at all on the menu.

Haha, I suppose it does make sense then. It must just seem to me that a la carte is whatever's standard because I can only ever afford one course, and that's the coffee that usually comes at the end!

And set menu, thought that was a joke ;)

Edit: however, we're talking about one camera here, not a course of cameras. CL for entree, R for main course, M for dessert. I'm going to stick with a la carte being a strange name until it actually refers to a specific combination of cameras (and who can afford that).

There is yet an other menu to choose from in some places"

Menu Degustation :

This is where you admit that you don't know as much as a chef with a Micheline Star or two, and let him choose the menu. The main difference between this and the "menu" is that typically the "menu" is in a cafe, and can be had typically for less than "a la carte" where as the menu
degustation is only found in restaurants, and is often two or three times the price of ordering a la carte.

If I am getting an understanding of the Leica world, some of the very limited editions with blue leather and gold plating would fall into this category!

Those prices sound like great deals. For those of you that were about to find the MP right at, or below $2,000, were those local buys, or was it purchased online?

The used market is pretty thin, and I can imagine it would be even more difficult to find a used MP locally.

Keep an eye on the Leica classifieds at PN. There can be some really good deals there. Last week a guy sold new 75/2AA and 90/2AA for $1700 each. They were gone within the hour. There is a 90/2AA there now for $1500, and a 0.85x mag black MP (really hard to find) for $1850 that looks like it might be still available. The key is to be diligent and patient. It sounds like those deals are out there, but I just have to be patient and wait for the right opportunity...

...Not to mention fight off any of you guys from buying it before I do :D

I think that .85 M at pnet is an M7 with MP finder...

I once bought a like new chrome MP for $1800. That was 2 years ago.

Don't forget you can get $200 off on eBay with BIN live.com discount. Be patient. You'll find one.

I saw a 90/AA go for $850. I emailed the guy to confirm it was actually a 90/AA, but he had sold it in that space of 10 mins.

I've seen MP's go for ~$2000. If its any thing like M7's, which it should be, they tend to go around $2200, and sometimes up to $2500 if its in particularly good shape or the seller is pricing a bit high. Seen them go lower, but about the lowest is $1900ish.

I found a black paint MP in new condition on ebay with full paperwork and box etc for $2150 so you can find them. It was a .72 VF though. It looked unused. I also bought the guy's M6 also new in the box for $1100. Old retired guy - lawyer in Boston who decided he was too old to use them...

Man, I'd love to jump on that, but I'm a bit hesitant because it's an overseas purchase...does anyone know what kind of taxes may apply for importing to the States?

US taxes? its hit and miss. I have purchased from overseas and was never taxed.

My black lacquer MP came from a fella selling it here on RFF; turned out he was local and was willing to lower the price since I paid cash. Be patient and don't wait for the very lowest price (since this rarely occurs)....I not only consider the price but more importantly the condition of the camera.
