Hi,

Can anybody suggest honest and reputable sellers of used Leica M bodies and lenses in HONG KONG? I'm trying to find used MP or M6 Classic and lens.

Thanks.

You may visit Tin Cheung or other shops in TST. Are you a visitor of Hong Kong or a local? In any event, other fellows of the HK Chapter of RFF should be able to give further advice.

I will be visiting. The other HK guys in PN say that second hand M gear is overpirced in HK compared to dealers in the US. Would you agree? How are brand new prices?

Second hand Leicas in Hong Kong are priced pretty high and selection is slim. There is a pretty large Leica user community in Hong Kong as it is so there is a supply and demand inbalance to keep prices up. Also as mainland China is becoming more affluent much of the gear are going north to full that demand. I spend my Saturday afternoons going from one second shop to another to see what is available and really there isn't much. We tend to buy gear from each other via various Leica and photography forum, else mailorder. Register at www.HKLFC.com and post what you are looking for and I am sure someone will sell you one cheaper than what a shop can offer. New prices are generally less than US and Europe. The caveat is that we know what the prices are but the shops know you don't so you'll be at a disadvantage.

The odd thing

The odd thing

There isn't really that many 2nd gear stores in Hong Kong. There are two places in Central, and several in Tsim Sha Tsui.

There is also one in Shum Shui Po, be careful of that place, they actually price their 2nd hand items more expensive than new ones!

The Capa store in Central, is really more of a collector than a business. The store owner isn't friendly at all. He is not open at lunch time most of the time. Check out his prices and then tell me what you think.

I would agree the forums are the best place to find gear.

Actually most Hong Kong locals go buy their gear in Japan during their holidays from Map Camera or other places.

How correct.

Exactly, when you walk in, tell the store owner how much it's actually worth.

I know which store has a 2nd hand M6 in pretty mint condition. It has been sitting there for almost 8 months now. I was looking since last Xmas. I tried to get the guy to lower the price, and he won't even give a stupid HK$100 discount.

I won't name the store but it's in TST.

:(

I am not a Leica user as you can see from my profile. Nonetheless, if you could not find one on the forum/internet, the second shop may be an alternative. At least, there is no GST in HK.

Thank you all very much for your advice. I was considering buying second hand but was just a bit surprised to find a 8/10 M6 for HKD14000 in TST! Hence, my query about second hand prices. Thanks for informing me.

HK is pretty much overpriced for Leica gear. I am speculating that when the Asian Financial Crisis happened and digital kicked in, a lot of dealers probably paid a little over the odds for some of their gear. With increasing shop rents, most are reluctant to let it go 'cheaper'.

Also agree, our affluent mainland friends are helping to keep prices relatively high here.

Quite frankly, even the evil bay (where it's risky) and rff are better value - even with postage.

Having said that, if you know what you're looking for, Dick Chow in Champagne Court, home of the 2nd camera shops in Kowloon, is known to spin off a deal every now and then which is competitive. I think he has an M6 available for about HK$10,000 (about US$1,280).

The other place to look out for is San Francisco Camera in Wing On Plaza - next to Kowloon Shangri La. He is a Leica dealer - don't expect too many deals here but he has a good range of merchandise.

Most of the shops I visited in HK while looking for a 50 summilux had at least a few of the ZM lenses (those that sell Leica gear, anyway). You shouldn't have a problem finding them in TST -- I was sorely tempted to pick up an Ikon body as well. :)
