Sorry to hear that!
EBay is full of these "loaners " now, I have about a 10% success rate this year with auctions.
1 out of every 10 sales will make it to check out, and of those 1/10 only about half actually know what they bought, and do not request a refund a week or so later.

Its so hard to tell what kind of.buyer you will end.up with these days.
people seem to show no lack of ignorance and a complete.lack of.common sense!


I've had such bad experiences lately, I'm considering leaving eBay after 6 loyal years.

I know what you mean. I was stunned when I won a formal eBay dispute with a buyer this summer.

The buyer bought a computer accessory that was inconvenient, but not impossible, to use .

They wanted to return it as defective. It was not defective. The buyers' computer just needed a software update in order to recognize the device. The buyer did not understand what they were buying. The auction was a no returns auction. After numerous exchanges, we both filed formal complaints with eBay. eBay quickly ruled in my favor.

I had an unpleasant experience selling my M9 last year. I sent over extra pictures to the guy who ended up buying it whilst it was still on auction, on top of the very honest description plus maximum number of pictures I could post with the auction post, he went ahead and bid, won and then opened a case with Ebay just within his timeframe to do so saying that the item was significantly different from the description.

Thankfully, and to my amazement after hearing some nasty stories, they ruled in my favour. I was then inundated with some unpleasant correspondence from the buyer for a short time followed by a snarky, untrue and negative feedback score. I felt he'd bought it to use for a weekend and then return.

I doubt I'll bother trying to sell on Ebay again, its like Vegas - the only winner is the house, only in Vegas you can have some fun.

I'm personally done selling on eBay. Still have one ongoing dispute by a buyer who "assumed" a number of additional items were included with a recent sale. I guess you can't be clear enough. Now almost 60 days in, no resolution.

I've bought and sold thousands of items on ebay since 1998. I've had two or three issues during that whole time frame. Sounds like an unlucky run B-9.

A good and fair point to make. I've had more decent, even enjoyable, experiences with Ebay than bad. Including some interesting message chats with people from time to time. It's just when you do end up with a situation Ebay seems to 'go AWOL' giving their standard response of how they like Ebayers to come to an arrangement amicably or as some might say, "you deal with it."

BUT, I don't wish to turn this into another Ebay bashing thread. Suffice to say it didn't work out and I'll probably keep it.

In fact, no sooner had I sent it off to the buyer than I ended up meeting some friends in London after work. Which meant taking the train in and normally I'd take a camera or two and have a little wander around first. Time being tight I knew I wouldn't have time for that so decided I wasn't going to lug a bag or even an XP-1 around with me so went camera-less, had I not sent off the X100 it would have gone in my pocket "just in case." So now I have my pocket-able camera for those "just in case" moments.

It sounds like you got the best of this situation. The x100 is my go to on the go (at least when I want color available).
Recently I added the little dome shade from the Pentax 40mm limited lens.
This added only 5mm to the front of the lens while providing much better protection.
The camera slips even more easily into a coat pocket.

In a way, it was a blessing in disguise that you got to keep the camera. I have thought several times about selling mine just because I found the image quality not as good as my Nikon's dSLR, but I kept it simply because it's small, it comes in handy, and it's not all that bad after all.

And it's a heck of a lot lighter than a Nikon D700. 🙂

Update: The X100 has come home.

The buyer contacted me to say that the batteries didn't work, the charger didn't work and the scuffs weren't adequately photographed.

The batteries all work fine, as does the charger. As for the photographs not adequately showing the detail of the scuffs I'd have to disagree but there's very little point arguing so a refund and return was the outcome.

I don't think I can be bothered to go through the arbitrary nature of selling it on there again. It's pure luck as to whether you get a buyer or a loaner, someone who reads every word of the auction of just sees the title and gambles. So it looks like I'll keep it as a little pocket back up.

Sorry for your experience. Might I suggest that you consider placing it for sale on the RFF classifieds? I sold a bunch of diverse equipment (not just rangefinders) a year or two ago and had universally great experiences.

Sorry to hear about your recent ebay issues, recently, (I will not go into the full background), I have had two unpleasant transactions with picky buyers, after 1189 transactions I am now thoroughly miffed with ebay
