Using 35mm lenses on CLE - experience?

hello, I'm *not* a fan of the 40mm Rokkor when it comes to colour photography (for B&W, I think it's a perfect lens).

I just purchased a CLE, and I want to buy a UC Hexanon 35mm lens for it. I am wondering if anyone has suggestions about the framelines:

1. Should I buy the 50mm ltm-m adapter to bring up 40mm framelines?
2. Should I use the 28mm framelines, with the idea that the 28mm lines might actually be closer to 35mm?

**I would use the lens on an M6 too, so if option 2 is the best, i would get the 35mm ltm-m adapter. Otherwise, I would have to get both.

In my experience, the 28 lines come close to a 35mm fov. Just frame a little tight.
Especially towards infinity focus.

Hi, I just received my CLE from a RFF member. 🙂
I've got several 50mm and 35mm lenses in LTM + both adapter and I found a Rokkor 40mm f/2. I'm happy. 🙂
The 40mm frame line is much much closer to the 35mm than the 28mm is. After testing my 35mm lenses with 35mm adapter, I decided to use the 50mm adapter. This way you have to consider that the 35mm is just out of the 40mm lines. With 28mm frame lines you have no idea where the 35mm can be, IMO.

I too am curious about this as i just received a 35mm m-mount lens that i want to use on the CLE. It only brings up the 28mm framelines, though i'd actually prefer the 40 framelines. Is there a way to do this?

Yes, you can have the mount modified by somebody like DAG or Will van Manen, but it is a permanent change and will mess up the framelines on an M camera.

Or, you could depress the lens release button and gently turn the lens clockwise. That should bring up the 40mm framelines regardless of the adapter and lens. It works great and you don't need to modify the mount.

ahhh yeah, i tried depressing the lens release button but i guess the lens mount doesnt go far enough to engage the other framelines. I may just try to create a mask that will go over the VF haha

but, since the lens would not be tightly mounted against the camera mount,
wouldn't you loose focus accuracy doing that?

so far my 35s are ltm and use a 50mm adapter for those,
but I would like to get an M mount 35 and see the 40 framelines on the CLE,
28 framelines are too loose to guess the frame.

I've not noticed any focus errors when focusing the lens using the method I outlined. The lens is not noticeably loose. However, if using an ltm lens, then just buy a 50-75 adapter ring and it will bring up the desired frame.

It's not really unlocked, just push on the lens release button and roate the lens a tiny amount. Not until it actually feels loose.

I have found that the entire vf image outside the 28 lines matches up to a 25mm lens. So there is that..

I was looking for info on M mount "anatomy" to see differences between a 35 and a 50 mount but no luck yet. Can't find any useful description or images.
Same for camera's side of the mount. Where and how that discrimination happens to try to trick my CLE. And to learn how it works, of course.
Any link to this info would be useful.

Haven't a link but on the M2, as you look at the hole for the lens, there's a small tab at about 3 o'clock. Move the frame line lever and the tab moves up and down. It's subtle, looking at the tab inside I'd say it moves a mm from the 90 to the 35 position.

Put in an adapter and the lug pushes the tab as it is turned and locked. At the same time the frame line lever moves.

So the lug on the adapter is the link between it and the frame lines. The bodged ones I've had have all had a file used to amend them. I amend them with a felt tip pen and mark the real lens it's now meant for...

Here you go:

The length of that flange determines the frameline. On a normal M, the longest flange triggers 28/90, medium length 50/75, and short 35/135. On the CLE, if I remember right the longest flange triggers 28/90, the medium 28/40, and the shortest one 28 only.

The delta in flange length is maybe 2mm ? (just a guess from memory)

There is a mechanism behind the wall of the camera that triggers the frameline mask to change. Pretty easy to access on an M, never done it on the CLE.

...so it looks like nothing can be done to a 35mm M lens mount so it shows 40 framelines on the CLE...
Except forcing the lens clockwise as described earlier...
