R3A does not have a 35mm framelines. I am looking at this as it has a 1:1 life-size view finder rather than the 0.7 R2A. If using a ultron 35/1.7 on the R3A, would there be much "discomfort" when framing knowing that there are some areas around which is not visible from the viewfinder, assuming no 35mm finder is used? Unfortunately i am unable to get a body and lens to try on before i order online. Appreciate if you can share with me your experiences. Thanks.

The one drawback of the RA3 is that even the 40mm lines are not easy to see, especially if one wears glasses. Now that said I am one who does not feel the need for intense precise framing and thus it's not that important to me. Is it for you? Only you can answer that. I've used my 40 Nokton on my M3 with good success and it only shows 50mm framelines at it's widest. Again exact precision in my framing is not that paramount so I get by with it. If it's not for you either than the slight edges that are not visible in the VF might not be important but then again you might just get the 40/1,4 Nokton instead and have more seen in the VF plus the 40 Nok is a little faster, slightly lighter, seems slightly smaller, a little cheaper, and is M-mount while with the 35/1,7 you'd need a LTM-M-mount adapter.

I'd choose the lens for which the body I want has framelines, or choose the body that has framelines for the lens I want to use. Matching them is just smoother. OTOH, you could always get a 35mm external viewfinder for the R3a... 🙂

I'm shooting the Ultron 1.7/35 on the R2A. Very pleased to have the margin around the framelines for the 35mm. Makes for more comfortable, instinctive composition, IMHO. I imagine I'd feel cramped trying to shoot a 28mm using the outside edges of the finder, but that's me. Part of what I like about RFs is that margin outside the framelines in the first place. I'd say buy from someone with a liberal return policy so you can try the R3A with the 35mm without fully committing.

Thanks all for helping to answer my queries in the last few days. I have already placed an order for the R3A with the mini softrelease, 40/1.4 Nokton with LH-5 hood. Cannot wait for the package to arrive. I guess I will have to make do with one lens for now, and then maybe later on look at which wide angle lens to get.

That's going to be a nice rig for you, I'm sure! Anticipation can be difficult. 🙂

28mm makes for a useful companion to 40, I think, and fortunately, both the Voigtlander 28mm lenses are excellent.
