I am at a bit of a crossroads.

I have a little money in my accumulated GAS fund, and I have to decide.
  1. To be practical and upgrade my 5D to 5D2.
  2. To be romantic and get a BessaIII or Mamiya7II and scan.

The only think that is really holding me back from the latter is that scanning MF film seems to be incredibly expensive. The Coolscan 9000 is now running at around £3000. Sending off for develop and scan is extortionate. Dev & Scan at the UK labs costs around £1 per frame, and that for a very middle-res scan ~20Mp.

I have a Coolscan 50 for 4000dpi scanning of my 35mm, and all the reviews I have read say that the V700/750 has an optical resolution of around 2300dpi. => 40Mp file. That should be fine, but before I take the plunge I was hoping that someone might be able to post, link or email me a 2300dpi scan from a 6x6 or 6x7 frame scanned with a V700/750.

Whilst I'm being cheeky I might as well ask for something BW something colour and something from slide. But BW is what I mostly do.

Now I know that much higher quality is available from other types of scan, and actually I find that comforting because if I do ever trip the shutter on a prize winning image I can get it drum scanned and go from there. But for my normal work, let's say a top-grade A4 & A3 Lightjet print, I am hoping that I can manage with the Epson. Because I cannot afford a better scanner. :-(

Thanks in advance, but hurry because I will soon have enough for a 5D2, and there is limited time to save my soul. :)

I just bought a 5D barely used and I agree. There really is no need to jump into a 5d markII. Personally I think you could almost match the image quality of the 5d to the 5d II if you do post processing correctly. I am looking at the Mamiya 7II or the bessa. I have a whole bunch of medium format folders and I can believe the detail that comes from them. I have an epson 4990 photo with the glass holders and I feel it performs just as well as the v700. Kenrockwell has a write up of the 4990, but sometimes you can't always rely on what he says. Here is a picture scanned and processed with a super ikonta iv with tessar 2.8. I have better images from this camera but I thought I would post this to show you how much detail mf can bring.
