I heard it was coming back, but not for another four or five months. Fuji apparently managed to come up with a new emulsion that doesn't use some expensive or toxic ingredient that was in the old 50.
Velvia 50 was discontinued about two or three years ago. This was the premier film for Nature stock work. Intense yet controlled saturation, nearly no grain, even color- reds, blues & greens all true, yet contrast was fairly well controlled with a mild pull (I usually shot it at 40 and gave -1/3 or -1/2 dev.)
From what I've been reading, Fuji claims that the new Velvia will look identical to the old one as they were able to find substitute materials to produce the same image quality as the old one. I've never found the 100 emulsion to be worthy of the Velvia name. In many cases (that I've used it), it looked not too much different from Provia 100F and nowhere near the constrasty/saturated look of the 50. I was happy to get rid of the 100 and clear some space in my freezer.
I'm probably one of the few people who actually like the 100F emulsion and keep a stock of it 🙂
