Does anyone know if video exists of HCB actually shooting in the street? Not merely talking about his work, but footage of him on an actual shoot working?

Thanks in advance.

The fact that HCB was not fond of being photographed would almost seem to have invited journalist types - they're not known for taking "no" for an answer. However, it seems that he pretty well stopped photographing some years before he died, so he might have managed to avoid present-day problems.

It's interesting that someone so well-known as a photographer should have been so rabid (probably not too strong a word!) about not appearing on the 'other side' of the camera. I've read stories about his determination to avoid other peoples' cameras.

For what it's worth, shortly after HCB died, Charlie Rose had an interview with him on his PBS program. It was a re-run, but was rather interesting. Somewhat to my surprise, HCB seemed pretty fluent in English.

I've seen a short movie scene in a documentatation, somewhere on a market or shop mall in Paris, I believe to remember that he is partly hopping around like a Setter in a grain field, jumping towards the objects , looking through the finder of his camera, strange somehow..
And I got a video where one can see him working as a still photog during a film of Riviere about Michel Simon and Jean Renoir, meeting again after a very long time and having a 90 minutes conversation in a restaurant. He uses a wide lens there btw.

If anyone has a copy of this stuff, it may be good to infringe copyrights by uploading the segment to YouTube.

I'm sure everyone would love to see the clips.

Much as I enjoy his work I always had a little trouble not taking his self-professed MO without a pinch of salt. It was that picture of the guy jumping over the puddle. I just can't buy that it was serendipitous. In fact I remember reading (but don't remember where) that there has been more than a little speculation that a portion of his "decisive moments" were staged/posed/choreographed at his direction. One of those questions that will never definitively be answered because everyone who knew is dead.

Why does it matter if he staged a photo or two, if you look at them as what they are, are they not still some of the best images ever made? So he might have asked someone to leap over a puddle to make what he thought would be a great photograph. Big deal.

I once saw a short clip of HC-B photographing on the street. It looked like a parade in Chinatown. He was like a dancer, darting around very quickly, while he smoked a pipe. Sometimes while he was moving and shooting he would balance on one leg as a way to momentarily suspend him while he clicked a frame.

If anyone is interested in seeing the Charlie Rose interview with HC-B you can download it at http://www.jimarnold.org/downloads/HCB/

The MP4 version is better quaility if you can view that format and have the bandwidth to download it.
