Vignetting nikkor 24 2.8

I'm experiencing strong vignetting from f8 down with an original 24mm 2.8 lens. I'm using a standard (jessops) 5mm thick filter and dedicated HN-1 hood. I'm wondering if the Nikon L37 filter will reduce the problem presuming it's thinner in depth. Any other users out there willing to share any experiences/solutions?

Does it vignette without the filter but still using the hood?

I've seen no vignetting with this lens and the HN-1 hood, but haven't used it with a filter yet. You may want to try it with a thinner filter, but some of them (like Hoya) might not have threads to attach the hood.

Ha! I was referring to the ring not the glass.

My environment is not conducive to having no filter and the front element is quite exposed without. Will try to find a thinner example. Any one know the correct pitch of the threads?

Any regular 52 mm filter will work - just less than 5mm thick. I've never had the problem you describe but then never used such a thick filter.

That's what I thought. It just happened to come attached with the lens. I'll try a thinner one. Any ideas on thread pitch?

I have noticed corner vignetting when shooting skies with a filter and the HN-1 hood. No vignetting with either the filter or the hood alone. All my quicks tests were done at f8 on a late model non-AI version, but it is the later NC multi-coated version. I believe all are the same optically.

That's actually a Nikon F, surprisingly they are not 100% bulletproof as some might believe.

Belonged to a Vietnam-era photojournalist, who sadly did not survive. His name escapes me at the moment...🙁

Yes, mine is also a late NC with scalloped focus ring. I''m currently using it without the hood as a test.

Overall depth measurement with thread: 6.24 mm
Ring depth without threaded portion: 3.77 mm
Also lots of times I use the Nikon Rubber Hood to, as it is shallow and 3 inch wide.

Thank you very much. It seems I need a La1 or similar then as my filter is 5mm without the thread.
Just to confirm, have you been using the Hn-1 hood with the La1?

Yes I have, but lots of times the rubber one is in the bag already.

There is no particular model / catalog number on Nikon filters. Just the color designation.

These filter rings seem to vary all over the place. I checked the odd collection of 52mm filters I have. The thinnest is a Petri with a 2.5mm thick ring, but no threads on the outside to accept a screw in hood. An unnamed Japanese filter at 4.4mm, but another one at 5.0mm. A Tiffen filter measured in at 5.5mm.

The thickest filter I could find at about this size is a Canon 55mm filter - 5.7mm.
