As a neutral Motor Cyclist!!! (I did for a short time own a Zundapp Bella!!)
but, I have driven both Vespas and Lambrettas, and I honestly felt much more safe on the Lambretta as far as handling goes, although the Vespas did "look" neater!!

Gentle hum?? Vespa - italian for "wasp" I believe - probably due to the angry buzz rather than gentle hum!Now that's some dedication. But with the wind in your face with the gentle... Hum of the engine beneath you...![]()

Vespa vs Lambretta? Vespa compromises handling for simplicity and easier maintenance. Lambretta does the opposite. Both are scooters: small wheels=poor stability.
I've ridden allsorts and I know that no scooter compares to a half-decent bike in the handling department (although I can think of some east-german and russian bikes that weren't even half-decent!). They have their uses and devotees though and as a keen 2-wheel user I applaud that.

Well Karl, I'd have to disagree with that - after all don't modern cars have monocoque construction rather than old fashioned separate chassis & body.
Actually there is a huge difference between a chassis/body design and a tube/spaceframe design. In fact the Lambretta design is much more in keeping with performance cars of all ages. Modern cars are primarily made from monococque designs as a compromise (as with most modern technology...) between weight and cost. Monococques are cheaper to build than spaceframes, but lighter and stiffer than rail frames.
The Lambretta was a superior technology. The packaging of the Vespa won out, though, and no one would argue that the Vespa, particularly the old ones like above, are not a wonderful piece of art. I appreciate them myself.

I just came back from Croatia, and all types and ages of Vespas are still quite popular there. Even Renault 4 and Zastava 750 (a licence produced Fiat 600) are quite numerous there. Beautiful.
