Voigtländer 2/50 APO-M mount! PREORDER $999

Looking at the Australian distributer, the E mount versions tend to be $1-200aud more than the M version of the same lens (I'm assuming because E requires electrical contacts while M is purely mechanical).

That would put a VM 50/f2 APO-Lanthar at ~$1295aud. Not bad...

Got to be 1/7th (!!) the cost of a new Leica 50 APO?

Doubt it. The VM 50 1.5 is already 1300aud, which is smaller and less glass. 1400-1900 is more likely sadly...

Specially optimised for the M sensor and not recommended by Cosina to be used with adapter on Sony E, Nikon Z etc.
I wonder about film?

Oops, thanks for the correction, Will! Links above now corrected.

Film is more forgiving than digital with light hitting it at more oblique angles, but there's no downside if the light hits in more straight on. Long story short, the lens should be great on film too.

But it's actually lighter than the Leica APO.

One thing curious is it has 2 low dispersion elements compared to 5 of the FE version. MTF differs a bit too.

According to cosina’s dimensions it’s shorter in length but wider in diameter than the zm planar f2. It might be just me, but it looks bigger in those photos of it mounted on the digital leica.

Snatached from Petapixel's site. . . .

M-version appears to have fewer anomalous dispersion elements. Perhaps a function of a thinner filter stack?

Oh golly, we really are spoilt for choice these days. I'd just gone out on a spree to secure the fast (50 1.5 nokton v1), the sharp (rigid cron), and the small (reissue elmar-m), and within the span of a year the v2 nokton and this beauty come out. Exciting times.

Yeah, now this is the business.

On one hand, I love the choices Voigtlander give us, with the 50mm f1.2 and 40mm f1.2, and now the APO Lanthar. On the other hand, it raises questions about which one to get!

I wonder how this will perform and render compared with the Zeiss Sonnar and Summicron v5, or even the APO Summicron.

I also hope that Voigtlander eventually repackages the vintage style 50/1.5 with lens barrels more like this. The thin scalloped ring version is reportedly difficult to manage. Another lens I'd like to see with this lens barrel is the Ultron 35/1.7. But this APO Lanthar is very, very enticing.

Interesting. They are labeled here as "abnormal". 'Guess that is just a synonym for "anomalous" or maybe just a difference in translation. And I wonder what it means in this context. Different index of refraction?
