I like this lens to be in the RF lenses concept I'm finding to be only acceptable. :)

I owned this lens for several years and shot it on a IIIf. It seemed to have pretty bad light fall off and I finally sold it because of that. Yet, I see many images shot with it that have no light fall off at all (like Lynn's above): is that a matter of the aperture that was used, or directional lighting, or both? I have been thinking about getting the 21mm 3.5 because I now have an M2.

The 21/4 is a Biogon design that is very similar, if not identical to the ZM C-Biogon 21/4.5 (or rather, vice versa). Heavy vignetting is a given at large apertures.
 
lynnb, you are doing some fantastic work with the little COLOR-SKOPAR. The light and tones here are wonderful.

Unfortunately the level of barrel distortion that is visible in this shot, even though the horizon isn't very far from the middle of the image, dampens my joy with this little lens. I also don't love the focus stick, but on the 21 I can live with it because I generally zone focus it, rather than using the RF, for which it would suck for me (the reason why I didn't keep its 35mm brother). I live with these limitations because there seems to be no similarly affordable alternative (the Russar or the Canon 19 mm maybe? But hard to find).

It has mechanical vignetting that's only gone by f/11. That's a price for the small size and affordability that I'm very willing to pay.

The 21mm is pretty good for street photography (a bit wide often). I do not think these two gentlemen were aware they were in the picture. I walked up almost right in front of them and pointed towards the 3 figures, but slightly towards them. They were aware I was there, but probably not aware of the 90 degree view of the lens, and just acted fairly normal under those circumstances. After the quiet little click, I acknowledged them with a small friendly smile and subtle head gesture and walked away.

I quite like this little lens and think it's a lot of fun, esp given the size.



Can confirm that the LTM version works just fine on the Russian rangefinders, including the FED barnack style copies.


Very nice pictures in this thread.
 
Over the years I've had 3 different Leica 21 versions. I love the Color Skopar and use it often.... tiny, light. I've never had poor results from it
