Akiva, for sure it is!
I just can't buy any more lenses or bodies right now...
CV became my worst vice. I'm so ashamed...
Every night when I go to sleep I say "it's just too big"... But I don't even believe myself!
Wish you better luck!

It is; my CV 40/1.4 is undeservedly neglected ever since I got this one. A bit bulky to carry around, but nothing compared to most SLR lenses.I think this is one hullava lens, eh?

I like my Nokton a lot, but I have to admit, it has changed my "style" of shooting....I don't know if that is a good thing or a bad thing.....I am actually debating whether I should bring it with me on a photo trip to Myanmar in 2 weeks, due to the fact that I am not comfortable with carrying a 28mm/35mm/50mm combo.....it just doesn't work for me....I am used to a 28mm/50mm combo......I have a 50mm summilux (an old one, but a good one) and I used to depend on that for low light stuff until I bought the 35mm nokton, now my nokton has become my everyday lens and I really neglect my other lenses, it just doesn't seem right.....the more I look at my work from India, the more I want to leave the nokton at home........oh, well, I still have two more weeks to think about it.....
here are 2 recent ones from last weekend
cheers, michael

Yes the 35/1.2 is "bulky" by RF standards but since I found a lab that gives me 6 meg scans, I feel more comfortable cropping for my "tele" shots. Disclaimer: I did pickup a CV 35/2.5 for a really light daytime lens.

Hello Akiva.....to, be honest, the "bulk" doesn't bother me that much....I use an old 90mm summicron ("big bertha") and it is roughly the same size as the nokton...the size doesn't really bother me....I have big hands...
I think it is the focal length that I have a problem with...it is my first and only 35mm focal length that I have ever used, and well....I feel like I hardly ever use my 28mm or 50mm when I have all 3 lenses in my bag...I just don't see the point....I either walk closer to the subject or walk back a couple of steps if I am using the nokton....I hardly ever switch lenses if I have the nokton on my camera.....maybe that is a good thing and I should change my "kit"...but I think I want my photos from Myanmar to be shot on tri-x with the same combo that I used when I was working in India (15/28/50/90)....don't get me wrong, I love my nokton and it has become my favorite lens and I have used it almost daily ever since I bought it.....that said....I am not so sure if that is a good thing, personally speaking of course....
a couple of more
cheers, michael

Are those Thai lab scans? They look so soft. Your girl is beautiful, BTW.
I don't know the point of having both a 35 and a 28 in the bag. They are just too similar.

Thanks TWok, she is really cool......
Unfortunately, I scanned the prints myself...I know they s*ck.....the prints don't look as soft as the scans and I have learned to live with it for now.
Hey Akiva, I used a 15/35/90 combo last weekend for a little vacation that I took with my girlfriend and I brought this combo to see how I would like it....I never really missed the 28 or the 50 now that I think about it. I think for the next two weeks I will take this kit (15/35/90) out with me around Bangkok and see how I like it.
cheers, michael

15mm, something I should try.

Hi Michael, are you able to post some shots with the lens stopped down? Would love to see how shows details in the shadows. I am considering getting this lens.
On another note, do you take a lot of time to look through your RF viewfinder to meter, than adjust exposure settings and than compose with external finder when shooting with the 15mm? I suppose you shoot with the all manual M3 right? Are you able to shoot fast with it? Can share your experience as well?

Michael, your India b&w pictures are really strong documentary work. The pictures you've posted using the 35/1.2 are much more light-hearted and offhand in nature, so I don't know if you should directly compare to gauge the shift in style. Still, it would be a shame if you looked at the results from your upcoming trip and found that they fell short compared to your earlier work.
IMO, the wide-angle perspective of the 28mm really contributes to the punch of your India pictures, and you might find that the size of the 35/1.2 makes it harder for you to get in close like that -- don't leave the 28mm behind.

Hey Vincent, I will try to find some photos that I took with the lens stopped down, I usually don't shoot it that way, but I think I have a couple photos lying around here somewhere....I will post them when I can...
As far as the 15mm goes, if I am using my m6 then I use the internal meter and I will usually open it up a half stop, it depends on the picture obviously, but I tend to open it up a half stop of whatever my meter is telling me when I use the 15mm. If I am using it on my m3/m2 then I use a hand held meter (sekonic 358) and I just go with it, I don't tend to meter a lot when I am shooting, just a couple quick checks and adjust as I shoot...
As far as composing is concerned, the more you use the lens and experiement with it when you first get it, you will learn how to use it and how NOT to use it...composing can be really easy with it , because after a while, you start to see 15mm shots and the viewfinder is just there for a quick check.....
I can shoot pretty fast with 15mm...the focusing is easy...I used a rollei 35 for a couple of years as my only camera and I learned how to adjust the focusing and aperture on that and now when I use the 15mm, it is so easy to do.
hope that helps...cheers, michael

BTW I tried the CV 35/1.4 (so I could carry a smaller lens)and it is fine lens but besides being a 1/2 stop slower, its results are not up to 35/1.2 par IMHO. As a 6 footer the barrel on the 35/1.2 is really a nice fit.
