So I received Bobkonos' Canon VT today, with the 50/1,5 I have been lusting for.
That kinda heavy little lens feels too small on the camera though.
Together with the 50/1,2 it's another story though. This combo looks and feels like they were made to match. They were marketed at about the same time.
The big lens misses the slow speed dial by about a single millimeter. It stops just short of the infinity lock.
Coincidence in design doesn't exist.
And to make it even more unlikely: the lens is tipping the body over to lean on the filter ring. Without lenscap and with a film installed, the balance is just stable on the bottom plate! Even with the lens extended for short range.
I wouldn't be surprised if the big 50/1,2 hood would be 77mm in diameter. Then it would be flush with the VT base... But me being a mere mortal I can't check that.

So, have you had a chance to shoot it yet?

Not yet. Just unpacked, fondled and amazed about the features and state of the camera.
Still have to finish various films in other cameras. No hurry. Besides, the lens makes the photo, not the camera. So the Canon Sonnar will be doing a lot of fcompleting films.

Rob,
I have a 50mm 1.2 Hood, and bought a Canon 77mm Ultrasonic Lenscap to put on it. It is -ever- so slightly too small for that. I added several thicknesses of black Scotch Photo Masking tape to the lenscap.
Now it fits just great, and looks quite cool.

the Canon L1 seems more balanced with the Canon 50/1.5 than the VT does.

My CLE fell in love with the Canon 1,5 directly. They feel like made for each other. I have been using the CLE more for really lowlight stuff recently, but the 1,2 is kinda big for it. And the loss in speed from 1,2 to 1,5 is not that serious.
So I was right about the hood diameter! Proves the 1,2 and the VT really were made to fit together.

Well, let me just say that I am delighted this kit found a good home. Rob-I will look for some 40mm filters for you. Any particular ones?

Bob, you are the best. 40mm filters are hard to come by.
UV and yellow are first, but I am planning to use the Summicron hood on it, so any empty filter ring would help for that. In low light I don't use filters to avoid halos.
I thought this camera was heavier than the M2, but it is almost the same. With the rapid winder in the package!

The Canon 50/1.5 is particularly dense. When you look at the optical diagram, you'll see that it's almost all glass, not much air. Perhaps a number of the elements are flint (lead) glass, which is denser than other glasses.
The later Canon RFs certainly do tilt up with light lenses.

When I was still doing news work I used a VT Deluxe with a Canon 50/1.8 and a Summaron 35/3.5. The finder could be set to either, and the trigger wind was necessary if I had to work quickly. Balance was not good when it hung from its strap.
