Vuescan - Printed Size setting

Hello,

In vuescan in the 'Output' tab there is an option to set the 'Printed Size'.

Relating to negatives, is it best to set this to 'Scan size', set a high dpi and then resize yourself in photoshop? or set the 'Scan size' to the size you intend to print, for instance 12 x 8 and then set the dpi to something suitable.

Would I be right to say by picking a larger 'Print size' than the actual negative your inviting vuescan to do the resampling, is there any danger in that?

Apparently it does not resample. So it just changes the internal DPI setting of the file to give you the inputted print size. A pretty useless thing generally, in my opinion.

Personally I think you should scan at an appropriate DPI for maximum resolution and then resize in PS to your target print DPI and save to a different file.

Thanks for that, Id be interested in knowing what everyone would recommend as being the best way, scan as 'scan size'?

I always use the "scan size" option when using Vuescan. Resulting file I keep as "RAW" tiff, and work on it in PS, as psd file, that I then can resize, or change the profile.

Set it to Scan Size and scan at the highest DPI your scanner gives. If you scan at a lower resolution, then you may decide later you want to make a larger print, and need to rescan the film and redo all the editing you did to it before. Easier to scan large the first time.
