Canon LTM Vulcanite removal on QL17

Canon M39 M39 screw mount bodies/lenses
Check with Morgan Sparks, from Cameraleather.com. The method he recommends to remove it from Leica bodies is with paint and varnish remover with a certain component (chloride), in a thick emulsion so it clings to vertical surfaces.

Now... if you're intending to do the procedure on the QL17... is that the G-III or not? The G-III has a small sign on the front that you may want to keep or remove.

Check Morgan's site at www.cameraleather.com and have fun looking at the pics! :)

Hi,
The method Morgan suggests on his site is for the removal of vuncanite on leicas. The covering on the Canonets is vinyl not vulcanite and so this will not work. I would do as the Greyhoundman suggests. If you do not need to keep the old old covering, it may be easier to use a knife. I use one of the larger Exacto knives with a large curved blade because generally, I am going to use a new cover. However, as has been said, it is a real *****.

It helped on my Canonet by using a heat gun aimed at the leather to soften the glue up a little before removing with a sharp wood stick. It can not be saved, it will rip to pieces. The back of the camera was a lot easier than the front.

I've found that ethyl alcohol works on most vinyl removals. It's one of the milder solvents that works, so I start there and only go to stringer stuff if it doesn't work.

Peel a corner, apply some alcohol, wait a minute, peel, apply some more...

Canonets have very thin vinyl which frequently is unusable after it is removed.
